You can't just go by a wiring diagram.

You need a 12VDC tester to see if you have a fused
12VDC power supply to tap into to trickle charge
your 12VDC electric winch battery.

Jim it is hooked to a 2012 f150 with the tow package the center wire is for auxillary power and it is fused.

exactly my plan Mitch I like outside fenders on my trailer so it is a little narrow inside but i prefer to load my car with a winch.

Oops, my mistake.

I had images of six sexy co-eds outside Hugh Hefner's home, pushing his Model A (a Duesenberg - not a Ford) up his enclosed car trailer.

But after reading a few post I see I was mistaken. This thread is NOT about wenches but rather "winches".

I am putting a winch on my trailer this weekend I like the idea of wiring the 7 plug to charge the battery when you are towing the trailer I have a 7 plug on my truck and trailer do you splice into the trailer wire or add a wire for the aux orange wire and would you run a ground wire from battery to the trailer frame so when hooked to the truck will that be a good ground all so what gauge wire do you use for the orange wire

Kevin on my trailer i use a junction box which makes troubleshooting and wiring on your trailer much easier definitely run a ground wire. I do not like to splice into wires since it can lead to corrosion.

I use a warn 2500 or 3000 lbs capacity, I'd have to double check the size but it works great for me. I use it to pull my dead A into an enclosed trailer, not the fastest thing but I'm not in a hurry to get it into the trailer.

I'm the same as Tom. I have a hand winch on my trailer. The A is a light weight compared to some of the cars I've winched onto the trailer. The heaviest has been around 4400lb, and it was a bit of an effort, but I still managed to do it.

Looking at the given data as a physics problem the maximum line pull will be ~24% of the load. 2400 lbs x 24% = 576 lbs. This is based on your ramp length and rise and nominal friction (rolling resistance, tires fully inflated, brake OFF, vehicle wheelbase exceeds ramp length). Three big guys each pushing 200 lbs would do it without the winch.

You need to include some fudge and safety factor in selecting a winch. A 1500 lb winch would be almost 3X, plenty.

Another reason to put a winch on your trailer is to have the ability to transfer a "dead" car from your trailer to your lift. I put a 10,000# eye bolt on the front cross member and use a turning block. Back the trailer up to the lift and adjust the height. Run the cable under the car through the turning or snatch block back to the car and winch it on to the lift.

Check the wires with a test light or meter to be sure, but the black should be the 12v charge wire. The center wire is usually used for backup lights.
