Default Contaminated gear oil

Changing the transmission gear oil in my '48, noted microscopic steel flakes in the old oil. Total amount was less than a half thimble full. No operational problems. Oil not blackened. Is this a sign of normal wear?

I would be tempted to take a look inside. If you don't, do put in a magnetic drain plug.
I put one in the fill hole (also)- the thought is that one could pull it without draining the oil.

I hope/assume you haven't changed the Tranny in a long time. If its been a short time I'd be concerned about that much ground-metal in a short time period.

Using GL-4 85W90. Been in there a long time. Are there magnetic drain plugs available to fit a '48 transmission?

Buy some earth magnets off ebay or something. You can put them on your engine oil plug and gas tank as well if you like. Very powerful and pretty cheap. The little disc ones are great. Pops right on the outside of the plug and I've never had one come off.
