Default High School Builds an A for TROG

THE SHOP, a trade magazine, has a cover feature of the Great Neck High School auto shop building an A for the Race of Gentlemen. They competed in 2016 and 2017. The story is not online yet: www.theshop.com

That is neat that some schools still have shop classes. A TROG A would sure be a fun project.

I bought my late '31 Deluxe Coupe as a restored car that was built for the 2001 Great Race - by a team of High School Auto Shop (all phases) students. This was done by the Ponca City High School, in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
The auto shop teachers were: J.D. Hanks and Greg Cunningham.

I bought this car because after searching for several years (Hemmings, etc.) I finally found the 'perfect' car for me. It had all of the features that I had always wanted in a 'Driver' and all of the features I had always wanted in my own car - Ford Maroon color, Deluxe trim, roll-down rear window, dual side-mounted spares, rumble seat, trunk; modern 'touring' engine build by Ron Kelley (with Stromberg carb, Electronic Ig., etc.), Mitchel Over-drive, 18" K-H Ford accessory wheels, etc., etc.

After going through the three-year experience of doing a 'ground-up' restoration of my Grandfather's 1928 Phaeton 50 years ago (I was young then), while a I knew exactly and precisely what I wanted in my second Model A, at 70 years of age, I no longer had the energy or time to build another car. So I just kept looking over a three year period, hoping to find the exact car I wanted - already finished.

And it was Hemmings online that finally gave me my chance. Thanks to the fortuitous meeting and relationship of someone in Oklahoma who wanted the same car as me, and the great auto shop program at Ponca City High School.

I believe in supporting groups like this. There is one in PA that I have donated cams for their project. Recommend others to help also.

Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California has a Model A club of their own that is a chapter of MAFCA. They do not have an auto shop as it was closed years ago. The building is still there, but it is now a study hall. The club was started a couple years ago by Wilbert Smith, a member of the Santa Anita A's of Arcadia, California and is supported by the school faculty and by members of the Santa Anita A's.

In the past two years the club has had a hand in the restoration of a 1928 phaeton. The car and all the tools and parts are kept in an enclosed car trailer on the campus and is available for after school restoration activity. Much of the restoration effort was donated by local businesses in the community, including machine shops, body shops, and upholstery shops.

There is an article about the PHS club in the January\February 2018 publication of the Restorer, page 29. The 1928 phaeton is to be raffled off and some of the proceeds will go to the purchase of another restoration project.

I noticed there was an old reply about this last year that our friend Tom Endy made.

Tom was commenting about our Pasadena High School Model A Ford Club.
I just want to update you all, the raffle car this year is a 1929 Roadster; it will be painted a dutches blue which turned out just beautiful on the 28 Pheaton last year.
I hope you see the merit of teaching youngsters about our hobby. They have a great time .
