32 4 cylinder ford in 33 ford 4 cylinder frame
I am putting a 32 4 cylinder model b and 32 transmission into a 4 cylinder 33 ford frame. When I lower the engine into the frame the crankshaft pulley hits the front crossmember.
Does anyone know if the 33 4 cylinder and tranny are different lengths than the 32? Are the driveshaft / torque tube different lengths from 33 to 32? Any thoughts/information would be appreciated |

'33 and '34 driveshaft / torque tubes are different lengths for 4 cylinder and 8 cylinder. I'll try to find a thread from a few months ago where this was demonstrated.

The length of a '32 and '33-'34 four-cylinder engine is the same from the tip of the crankshaft to the end of the univeral joint of the back of the transmission.
Assuming that you are using a '33-'34 rear engine/transmission insulator/motor mount at the rear of the transmission and that the 'ears' on that insulator/motor mount are facing forward and not rearward and that the rear axle assembly is for a four-cylinder engine all that will be left that will cause the crankshaft pulley to hit the front crossmember is that you have the wrong crankshaft pulley on the end of the crankshaft. Along with the water pump and generator mount on the timing gear cover, the crankshaft pulley on four-cylinder engines was shortened for the '33-'34 fours which was necessitated by slanting the radiator rearward. You will need to replace the '32 crankshaft pulley (B-6312) with the '33-'34 version (46-6312) which is noticeably shorter. If you do not have the "46" water pump and timing gear cover, you will need those as well (for the fan to clear the radiator core and for the generator pulley to line up with the crankshaft and water pump pullies). You may also find that you have exhaust system routing problems if you do not use a "46" exhaust manifold. (Even with the shorter crankshaft pulley, the four-cylinder engine in a '33-'34 is a really tight fit with the back of the cylinder head periously close to the firewall; so close in fact that it is just about impossible to install the accelerator cross shaft assembly on the firewall once the engine is installed.) |

The 33 4 cyl drive shaft assy is about 1-1/2 "shorter than the V8 one.The 33 FW hsg is different than the 32 hsg in that the chatter rod holes are in the casting,rather than in separate bolt-on brackets.The 33 4 cyl uses a pressed steel angled floor board with a hump in it to clear the hump for the starter hsg.

Here you can see the difference, I had similar problem when changing to a V8.
The Fourcylinder engine has bigger cylinder diameter. Thats the reason for it to be longer. Just flip the rear mount, and shorten the tourque tube. I had to get a V8 tube (the rusty one). Last edited by Mr 42; 02-26-2012 at 12:40 AM. |

Also, engine mount bracket is wider for '33-4...

The early '33 motor mount bracket (and front cross member) has the same insulator hole spacing (12") as a '32, but in both the early and later instances the spacing of the holes for the motor mount bracket is narrower on the timing gear cover. (The photos above are of the later 17" spacing that you refer to.) |

All in all, a LOT of annoying little differences for an engine that was nearly out of production and barely selling in '33-4!
I probably have most of the bits except for torque tube around my basement somewhere. Are you near New jersey? |

That's definitely a lot of differences, just to gain a little extra leg room!
Three questions for DavidG: 1 What colour is that car, please? 2 Anti-chatter rods were mentioned - shouldn't one of them be visible in the second photo above? 3 Is the 4-cylinder '33-'34 rear axle/torque tube like the Model B, with a round pinion flange, or the later V8-style with scalloped one? 1) Emperor brown - medium 2) It's there, but not easy to discern from that angle (see additional photo below of right side of engine0. 3) The only difference between '33-'34 V-8 and four-cylinder rear axle assemblies is in the length of the torque tube and driveshaft (1 11/16" longer for the V-8). |

One further characteristic of the '33-'34 four-cylinder engine steady rods that I learned the hard way is that they cannot be installed once the engine/transmission assembly is installed in the chassis. Between the fact that the holes for them are integral with the flywheel housing, the 1 11/16" setback of the engine/transmission in the chassis, the greater length of them between the shoulder and the threaded end, and the design of the chassis frame "X" member and forward edge of the floor sheet metal, the steady rods must be attached to the flywheel housing before the engine/transmission assembly installation in the chassis is finalized. There is simply not enough clearance to add them once the u-joint on the back of the transmission is on the splines of the driveshaft.

Thanks David, that's a nice colour. Also interesting on the torque tube, as it would make it "easy" to mistakenly get the wrong '33-'34 axle if you were not aware of the subtle difference.
