Default oil pan appendage

Pulled out this oil pan to use in my new build and noticed this.
Thought it was a return line from an added filter, but upon inspection
I found it is blind with no opening on the inside of the pan.
Any idea what it is for ???

Look on that blind spot on the bottom side and see if there is not a slot cut in it to direct oil flow towards the bottom of the pan.Spray some carb cleaner or WD-40 in the fitting and see if it comes through to the inside.

The return hole is located on the bottom of the appendage.

If it has no return hole, it may be a plug for a vehicle with no filter added. (return delete)

As has been indicated there should be a slot in the bottom which directs the oil flow toward the bottom of the oil pan.

Seems like gravity's all that's needed to direct oil flow in that setup. Jack E/Nj

Checked and found a small hole about 1/16 on the bottom.

1941 pans had a return fitting at that exact spot. I've had pans like yours and have wondered, like you, why the "patch" on the inside.
