Hope you get to feeling better. I did a similar thing after cleaning out a 32 sedan a few years back. Never made the connection about the inhaled dust till after the dr. and
I went thru everything I had done for the previous week. The dots all seemed to connect afterwards. Since then when in doubt the mask and the rubber gloves go on. Hope that you have a speedy recovery and feel better soon. Us old guys need to stick together.

For at least three generations, my family had Border Terriers for rodent control. Those little guys would even tackle badgers, although they would seldom win. They never knew when to quit.

The yard of our last house was overrun by voles (field mice), which are well known carriers of Hanta Virus, when we moved in. We got a little terrier type mutt from the pound and he cleaned them out within six months. Watching him chase the little varmints as they burrowed below the snow was hilarious. Never did cure him of eating them!

Having been in hospital & re-habs 3 times in the last year, for 30 days at a time, I can know what you mean, Tom. It's HARD, not to go "BONKERS", just watchin' the clock & wearing out the remote, surfin' the TV! But I met some REALLY nice people & made several new friends while there.

Another one you have to be aware of is histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis can be found in bird and bat droppings (feces) as well as damp soil rich in decayed material. It has similar symptoms to Hanta virus.

This article about mice droppings and disease was the most important article that I have read on the barn. This information should be shared and remind people to wear protection.

We wore BANDANAS, when scraping the chicken roosts with an old HOE & cleaning out the chicken house & you felt all ITCHY, as there "might" be MITES, also----OH, the "joys" of living on a farm.

Typical barn find - Mouse Heaven! I know exactly what that smells like . . . my AA sat in a barn for 25 years. You should wear a surgical mask, long sleeves and rubber gloves when cleaning it up. Contact through the skin or mucous membranes (such as inside the nose) of mouse urine or droppings can cause Leptospirosis which is a bacterial infection that without treatment, can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death. Be careful out there!
