Default thermostat

Working on a stock '35 Flathead. Sent leaking water pumps out to be rebuilt. Planning to replace radiator hoses and thermostats. The thermostats I've seen so for that match what CAME OUT OF THE CAR are listed for 1937 -40. Any suggestions?

Are you looking to use a barrel shaped thermostat, or a modern style one?

I know nothing about these thermostats, never used them, but I know they exist.

I've used them. So far they work just fine.

The ones that were in it are the barrel type. I'm guessing that I need them?

Depends on you and what you want to install.

That is what I would call the one you buy at the local autoparts store.

For me on my 36 is the question to run with or without thermostats? Mine is a bellows type that goes in the hose. What are the advantages and disadvantages to run without? Right now as far as I know I'm without, and another question is do I just put one in and on what side?

Thermostats bring the engine up to operating temperature quicker and maintain a minimum temperature. Higher engine temperatures improve lubrication, helps remove blowby contamination of the oil, reduce sludge build up, increase engine efficiency, etc. Lots of benefits.

Two are required. One in each upper hose....

My car seems to run so hot all the time, no issue with it running cold. Temp gauge sits about 7/8 all the time while cruising.

Yep, need to check it with an IR gun to know what it is really reading. Thermostats should not have any impact on the maximum operating temperature.

I am running two 180 degree stats from Robert Shewman. I just got them last week and they are very nice and are working great so far.

One thing to mention when using a laser temp gun is to keep in mind that the internal temperature of the engine will be several degrees hotter than the external temps you read with the gun.

I am by no means an expert as all of these guys just helped me work through my own cooling issues, but while reading up on my issues I found that information on using the temp guns.

I would guess they are rare and most likely worn out! Not sure why anyone would want to run them.

Auction says

2 Antique Vintage Ford in-hose thermostats.

Tested. Open at 145 degrees. Very rare.
YMMV, but I agree, I sent the gent listed above an email about his new t-stats, for $5o for the pair, I'd prefer peace of mind for new.
