Door locks
On my '30 town sedan, the door locks only worked on the driver's side. I repaired the right rear lock so now three of them work. Of course, the right front has no locking knob and now I'm faced with the keyhole on the outside of the door. I'm ready to remove the inside panel to get at the guts of the door. I'm going to take the keyhole lock to the local locksmith. How does the lock come out? There doesn't seem like there is much room to work in there. Hard job?

Re: Door locks
Kurt,
Thanks for your prompt reply. Question. I'm not trying to remove the door handle, but just the keyhole lock. On a fordor the lock is in the door skin and not in the handle. Do I need to remove the handle too? Marty |

Re: Door locks
You don't have to remove the inside panel.
As Kurt said, turn the handle 45 degrees and pull. Once it is out you can try to remove the cylinder. |

Re: Door locks
Sorry, didn't read careful enough.
Mine is a coupe so lock is in handle. |

Re: Door locks
Ray,
Thanks. I do see a small hole on the edge of the door, but I don't see a screw in the hole. I'll have to probe around a little. I can understand the confusion as not all A's are the same. My TS is a Briggs body. Marty |

Re: Door locks
Marty,
Ray is correct. There should be a small set screw in the edge of the door. Unscrew it a thread or two and the lock should come out. If it doesn't then the wiggle the handle a bit and it will. Mike

Re: Door locks
Boy, you guys are fast and correct. I read Ray's post and went out to the garage. As I said in my last post, I saw the threaded hole but no set screw. I pried on the lock a little and the key set came out. I guess the only thing holding it in was a lot of dirt and a little luck. I'm off to the locksmith now to see what can be done. I'll let you all know the outcome. Thanks a million guys.

Re: Door locks
If they can't/won't fix it, then buy a new one. They are sold by the vendors, that is what I did.

Re: Door locks
Well, the locksmith has the lock set and they think they can set the lock to the ignition key. Now my next problem, can any one tell me the size and thread count, and length of the set screw? I can't find that in any of the vendor books.

Re: Door locks
Mike,
Thanks anyway. I went back out to the garage and tried different sizes and found a 1/4 20 fit perfect. I measured it, cut off the head, and made a screwdriver slot with a hacksaw and all is well. Now I just need to hear from the locksmith. I really appreciate all your help. Marty |

Re: Door locks
Well, guys,
Put the old lock back in this afternoon. The locksmith made a new key and everything works just like it did 87 years ago. Thanks for all your help. Ain't this a great site? Marty |
