Searched on line and couldn't find a source for 170 degree t-stats for an 8BA. They all seem to be 160 degree or 180 degree, or higher. Does anyone know a source or part number?

The original 8BA Ford part number was superseded to: D5PZ-8575-A
Ford dealers still carry them. Whether it's 170, I can't swear.

40cpe: Here's a chart from the 49-51 Merc/Lincoln Manual that may be helpful. The ranges for opening and closing are pretty close that maybe you can use a different thermostat.

The best stats for your engine were Robertshaw 330 types.
I think they made 170 degree ones. The number would have
been 330-170, 330-180 or 330-190. 170 degree stats are NOT
going to make your engine run cooler in the summer and if you
need the heater in cooler weather it won't warm the engine
enough. The 330 have the largest flow openings of any stats.
These will only fit the later engines with the goose necks. G.M.

Summit Racing has R.S. 330-160 and 330-170 stats at $23.00 each

G.M.: Thanks for those Robertshaw numbers. I want the 170 degrees stat because my fan t-stat is supposed to turn off at 180 degrees and I want it to cycle.

A lot of the radiator cooling fans have an adjustable thermostatic temp range so that you can tailor the on/off temps. Where is the temp sensor supposed to go on yours? Some just connect to the outside of the radiator tank and some are wet types.

This one screws into the water jacket in the normal temp sensor spot in the head. It is advertised to turn on at 195 and off at 180. No adjustment on this one. It came as part of the Cooling Component harness. I have it on a switch that can control it to run on the temp switch, or manual, or not at all. It would be nice for it to work automatically, though.

Those temp switches are generally just a bi-metallic switch. They are manufactured to a tolerance too. If it is 180 degree the tolerance could be 10 degrees either way. I think you can get them in different temperature settings. 3/8" NPT are common but there are others sizes and adapters to make them fit other threads.

You might just have to run it and see how it does. You can use other types of switches if you have to. The ones with the capillary tubes are kind of a worry some looking set up but they work and they are adjustable. You just have to take care of how you install the capillary tube in the radiator hose.
