Talking A California Survivor - California Cabriolet V-8

It is always nice to see a survivor

I just dropped of this 1934 Ford Cabriolet V-8 that was part of a trade.

I was asked by my friend to travel from Flagstaff, AZ to San Diego, CA
to start a trade from San Diego & Long Beach ...

While that might seem a relatively long way to go
for a short round transport trip ...

Kim is my good friend and I was honored to make the round trip trade.

What a great car, that's a lucky find. Hope they do the right thing with it and not cut it up or modify it.

Nice looking car but a survivor? I had always thought, perhaps incorrectly, that survivor was a vehicle that had not been previously restored.
Have I been incorrect all this time?

I had the same understanding of the terminology ....Maybe “survivor”is going the same route as “barn find”??....,,. Mark

The cherry on the top, Kube, is usually at some point in the picture offering of said V8 is the requisite 8BA under the hood of a 32-40's car AND not only "survivor" attached BUT "original V8" too!!!

Think of it as 'survivor' with a very small 's'. Notwithstanding, it does look like a nice car and it has survived, just like any car still around starting from the day it leaves the assembly plant.

I'm 'wondering'... Any chance that was Bernie VanAalst's 34? In any event, it looks like it. Bernie's car still had original factory upholstery (in relatively good shape), and original 34 engine. I'm not sure about the paint, I think it was factory, not sure. And, it had a top that he replaced. I think he only drove it maybe a couple times, then remained a garage queen for around 30-40 years.

Where did I miss the part about this car being "RESTORED" in the past? DD

I transported this Cabriolet for my friend Kim Dobbins
who lives in Long Beach, CA.

This 1934 Ford Cabriolet was Bernie Van Allst’s
who lived in Corona, CA.

Kim bought it from Bernie.

Kim did a partial trade with Webb Smith
who lives in Bonita, CA.

Thanks for the info. I knew about the 34, for several years. I helped Bernie a few times with maintenance and repair work on two of his other cars. The 34, as well as several other cars, were always sitting there. There are a couple of people still around that could tell much more than me about that 34. One would be Bernie's wife, who I still see occasionally. I lost track of the 34 when it was sold from the estate, although I recall talking briefly with the buyer.

they were both sides in the early years, no definite year change, or law set in place that i know of. my 09 maxwell jr. is right hand. kim dobbins is one of the big players in the "mint original" early brass fords. not a personnel friend, but i have visited with him at the brass swap meets a few times. good man, expert on brass fords, but this is the first i have heard of a v8 in his collection. but then, who wouldnt want it!

Thumbs up Kim Dobbins

I met Kim Dobbins several years ago when he was picking up the Rio Van Winkle Model T in Bakersfield, California.

He asked me to transport a couple other cars.

It was my first Bakersfield Swap Meet.

There is no one like Kim Dobbins.

for those unfamiliar, the rip van winkle model t is a fun story. there was a farmer here in minnesota who never drove a car, but the local ford salesman would stop by every year and try to sell him a new ford. the man got tired of the ford mans visits, so he bought a new ford just to keep him away. the new ford touring, about a 1919 i think, was driven from town a few miles and then put up on blocks in a shed. the farmer bought license plates every year and put them under the back seat. so the new car sat for about 10 years or so until some kids stole it for a joy ride. they only went a few miles until it ran out of gas. so then, the car sat in the shed again, with about 15 miles on it, until the man died in the late 30's. then, a local man bought it, never drove it, until he died. his son, took it to california where it sat some more, basically forgotten by the ford community for quite a while. the fact that mr dobbins now has it is news to me, but thats a good place for it! story from memory here, hope i got it close to factual !
