Body stamping number question
My 41 Ford Coupe has BB75 stamper on the upper firewall, what does that tell about the car? The engine has the same no. as the frame and all the information I can find tells me it's all original as a business coupe. Al

Re: Body stamping number question
Do you mean like it's stamped in like the chassis no. is stamped in, or is it like a rubber stamp with a paint or ink? If the latter it could be an inspectors stamp.

Re: Body stamping number question
Can't get pics to post. The letters and no's are stamped with large stamps about 2" high. Al

Re: Body stamping number question
After looking closer at the stamping, the first stamp is an 8 and not a B. I'll try and post a pic. Al

Re: Body stamping number question
Its a factory body code. Attached firewall photo is from my '47. I believe it indicates number of cylinders (8), body color (3M=Monsoon Maroon), and I think the rest of the number indicates month and year the body came off the production line - before mounting on frame.

Re: Body stamping number question
Why would some cars have a stamped firewall but most don't seem to?

Re: Body stamping number question
It depends on the year with Ford. I don't recall on pre-war stuff having trim & date code info stamped there (maybe it was & maybe not) but after the war Ford used this method on certain vehicles till the body tags became the norm in the early 50s. I've seen it on the late 40s ford cars and commercial pickups but not all models. Some of this may have been different between different assembly plants too. Most of us would like to know more about this. Some of the truck guys have been collecting data on the "Bonus Built" Ford pickups & trucks for some time since the 49 & 50 models are so close in design it's sometimes hard to tell what year model it is. This is especially true when body parts get mixed & matched by previous owners.

Re: Body stamping number question
The experience of the Bonus built trucks of 48-52 demonstate a considerable variation in practice by assembly plant. Specifically, the marking procedure for build codes on the trucks ranged from hand stamping on the firewall, to painted code figures on the firewall, to nothing at all. One could presume that the same would apply to cars.

Re: Body stamping number question
rotorwrench touched on it. I seem to recalled the Early Ford V8 Book saying something to the effect that bodies were produced at different plants and each might use different or no markings. I guess individual plants didn't save records either.

Re: Body stamping number question
Found this number (101) stamped into the left side of the bulkhead on my Dagenham built 1935 phaeton. There are also several Briggs body stampings. My model 60 also as a number stamp (4447) on the right hand bulkhead, also built in Dagenham UK
