Removing an oil pump idler on a '42 Merc?
Thanks to a lot of help from the Barn I have gotten the engine unstuck after many months. Rotating assy is out and the wife and I got the last 11 valves out last night. I cannot say enough to encourage anyone removing valves to buy or rent the K&D 917 and 918 tools they make a tough job a breeze. I'm down to getting the remaining head studs, the camshaft and the oil pump idler out. I am having trouble with the idler cover. I searched a couple of times and could only find info on the 8BA styles. Do the earlier ones come out the same and will I need to drill and tap a hole in the idler shaft as it does not have a hole?

Just undo the 5 bolts holding the cover, and the whole lot, gear included, will come off.

That's what I figured, but that's not what happened and I don't know how hard I should pry on the cover?

drive it side ways with a brass punch, it will rotate at the shaft. just some good old gasket sealer holding you up if the bolts are all out

The cap is loose and spins with the shaft, but apparently the shaft is stuck in the hole and the assembly will not pull out. The oil pump is out, is there anything else that might be holding it in there?

interesting, mine was pretty crusty and came off easy once it popped free of the gasket surface. keep spraying the lube behind it and work it back and forth on the shaft. no clips or anything holding it. should slide off.

the shaft you see at the back has a small, like 1/4" or so pin on the end that locates it in the block. it should have lived in oil all its life, hard to imagine its that stuck! more violence! try to pry both sides equally.

Sludge, lots of sludge. It's out but wow! I finally got it with lots of twisting and prying. Thanks all!
