Default Bendix question

The Model A Bendix includes a large spring. What is its purpose?

Does it function by stretching out, or by twisting around the shaft?

Is there any detailed explanation of the unit somewhere on the Internet, preferably with illustrations?

It absorbs the shock of engagement, and it twists in (to tighten). If it expands out, you have the wrong spring.
