Chassis number experts please .not the location, i know that.

Here,s one for the experts. Looking at what appears to be a 1931 model A Tudor that is for sale locally here in The Netherlands. Pretty neat restoration on a solid car that was done in the U.S.A. Has the 31 gastank and gauge panel and the 31 grille shell but no 1931 dimple in the firewall for the fuel filter. Has a VIN issued by California DMV but it,s titled as a 1930. ( could the tank and grille have been swapped ) ??
So i know a lot can happen to a 86 year old car but if someone does a good body off restoration would,nt they come across the original chassis number and use that instead of a DMV number ? Why have your Model A look like a 1931 car and title it as 1930 ? Thoughts please. Good or bad, Don,t be shy.

It,s a private seller and we all know what a tank/dash firewall & grille look like. My description covers it pretty well.

Not all 31's have the indented firewall.that was a Mid Year change

A lot of mid 30's had the round speedo

Some States issue numbers that have nothing to do with the Ford numbering system ,

Especially if the owner built it up from parts without a title.

Has it got the long splash aprons by the running boards or short ones with the nose piece on the fender?

What was it titled when it was sold?

Easier to to let the title papers stay as they are then to go through the hassle of trying to change the title.

If the chassis number which shows '31 could not be accessed when titling maybe they used the engine numbers which show '30 model and titled it as such. My engine is a '30 but vehicle is '31.

They made alot more engines in 1930 than they used,they were used in 31, the indented firewall had to be introduced in june to meed some state regulations(no fuel lines in passenger compartments as of june 1931), ----so a early 1931car can have 1030 engine

I know, and a very 'expensive one' also.

Does it matter regarding the value of the car or what you are willing to pay? If not, buy it if you want it and can afford it and wrestle with the details later. Or, call it what you want to.

When a car arrives in the Netherlands, how can a guy tell if the car is not stolen? Does the Netherlands recognize an American title as legit? There must be some paperwork to fill out to get a car in or out of the country. Enlighten me.

Some years ago there was talk about shipping a car overseas, and as I recall, the paperwork had to be in order before the car is loaded.

The title needs to be with the car and everything is checked by US customs before the car is loaded for shipment. A car with no title can never been registered in destination country - it can be shipped but with another code (parts, parts car, ...)
At the port of destination the car and paperwork will be checked again by customs. trhen the car needs to pas the technical inspection. If something is not correct you are in trouble.
(I speak for Belgium here - I imported some 55-60 cars from USA during the past 25 years - other countries may use different rules)
