distance of fan to radiator
On a 32 with 59AB it looks like my fan will be 2 1/2 inches from radiator. I am concerned that it is a bit to far for good cooling.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
Adapt a shroud. You can purchase universal shrouds from many vendors. Perhaps Walker Radiator would be a good place to start.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
It would be interesting to see what you are working with. Have you lengthened the engine compartment by moving the firewall or stretching the frame. Do you realize there are several lengths of hubs for the early V8 fans that mount to the front of the generator, maybe you need a different fan. How about a picture of the hub on your fan and a measurement of the length of the hub?
Also a intake from about 1937 will work the best to mount the fan low, pm me if you need one. Charlie Stephens |

Re: distance of fan to radiator
Original 32 frame. Original K member. Model A front cross member. Later rear end with shortened torque tube. 32 rear transmission mount to K member. 59 AB block. Two carb Offy intake. The fan hub is really short but the fan is in really good shape, Saw a fan on ebay with 2" long hub for over 150 bucks but who knows how true the blades are. So I am inclined to make a spacer.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
If you decide to use a 32 V8 fan be careful and specific in the hub length. The hub itself is 3 3/4" long.Very often mistaken is the 37-39 truck fan which the hub is I think 4" long. How to visually check from a pic is to look at the collar on the end that bolts to the generator. It is very short - maybe 3/16".The 37-39 truck fans have a much longer collar. Here is a pic of a 32 V8 fan.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
Shroud should be set up so that fan is 2/3 in the shroud and 1/3 out of it.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
Another alternative would be a '37 passenger car fan which has a longer hub than the '33-'36 fans, but shorter (at about 2") than a '32 fan. The '37 fan would be a small fraction of the cost of a '32 fan. As Charlie has suggested, a photo of the front of your intake manifold, generator, and existing fan in their installed positions would be helpful.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
I'm kind of assuming that this is a generator mounted fan but with a later 59 series engine and a model A cross member, a lot is possible. There is more room in a 32 engine compartment than a model A. The 28/29 model A is the hard one to get a fan in. I've seen 21A fans mounted in 1932 frames with 59 series engines.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
It looks like a '37 fan would do the trick. What you have appears to be a '33-'36 fan.

Re: distance of fan to radiator
According to the Ford parts book the original ’32 V8 fan has a 15 ˝” diameter blade. From the front of the blade to the rear of the hub is 4 ˝ inches. The Ford parts book has the dimension for all the fans from 1928 to 1948.
This is a ’32 hot rod chassis I started to build and then got sidetracked on other projects. The main body is a Brookville but the rest of it is Early Ford. Its an original uncut ’32 frame with a 59A engine using original ’32 motor mounts so it sits in the same spot the original V8 was located. ’39 trans and a late ’32 rearend. I used a re-cored original ‘32 radiator. The fan hub is an original ’32 V8 hub a friend gave me, just the hub that he had hanging on the wall. The hub is about 3 7/8 inches long. The blade I used is 14 ˝ inches in diameter and bolted to the hub leaving about one-inch clearance to the radiator core. In photo you van see I flipped the motor mount bolts upside down so they would not rub on the lower hoses. I’m trying to think back what it was I had to do, it’s has been at least fifteen-year’s since I worked on it last. A stock 15 1/2 inch fan would have just barely missed the water necks. I remember having to cutdown a fan blade. Very carefully so it was still balanced when I got done. It was not a ’32 V8 blade, I wouldn't do that. At 14 ˝ inches you can see that it has enough clearance to miss water necks, it could be a little bigger. I “think” the problem I had was the original Edelbrock Slingshot intake’s port runners do not let the generator go down as far as a stock intake does. A 15 ˝” diameter fan would have come really close to the upper radiator necks. If you spent $400.00 for an original ’32 V8 fan (like I’ve seen them sell for on ebay) and then found out, you needed to trim the blades that would be a little depressing. Since this is a radiator for an original ’32 V8, 21 stud engine, the upper necks angle downward so a straight piece of hose to the water pump was used. I include a photo of a restored engine from the Harrah's collection. The aftermarket radiators will usually have the necks coming straight back. That eliminates the fan to water neck clearance problem so a stock 15 ˝ diameter fan would work. You change one thing from original and its start a chain reaction of problems. |
