Default All Alaskian Barners

I know we have a few Barners in Alaska. I hope you and your families are all OK after the big shakes you have just had.

Us kiwi Barners know what its like as we have to live with earthquakes as a "fact of life".Those from Christchurch Waiau and Kaikoura have lived through big ones in recent years where there has been devastation and loss of life.

You people take care up there.

Yes, hoping all is well with any Barner's in Alaska. Especially two brothers, Jim and Dennis Hackenberger (Alaska Jim and Flatrod on the Barn), who live in the Anchorage area.

Thank you for your concern. In the Anchorage area there is considerable road & bridge damage. I had lots of plates / decorations ect fall & break. cracks in walls & a busted water pipe. All can be replaced/repaired. I have all kinds of shit hanging from my garage ceiling & walls & all survived. Fortunately there is no report of any fatalities. Over all I think that we are all very fortunate. I havn't spoken with Dennis, but Jim called me from Texas where he currently is & said that his daughter said that they also had a mess there. He is looking into flying back here to tackle cleaning up the damage.

Most of us here in Fairbanks didn’t even feel it, unlike the “big one” we had in 2001 neat Valdez. But this one is much worse, daughters house outside Wasilla is a trashed, grandkids are all ok. And my son was in Anchorage when it happened. All are ok thank God, things can be repaired. My son sent pictures, miracle no fatalities!
Jim,
Hope Dennis’s is ok and his house and shop held together in one piece.

Checking in, all is good here, just 1 car out of 40 with damage, sheet rock fell on it and broke the side mirrow off. It trashed the shop both here and at work. I never lost power, its just a big mess for me to clean up. These aftershocks are getting old! 100's of them!

Like Ralph said, not too bad here in Fairbanks. Major damage in Anchorage but so far everyone’s still alive.

It’s not over yet, just had a 5.0 aftershock, if you can call it that.

It most likely won’t be any trouble getting to Fairbanks up the Alcan. And heck, 90% of the roads are under construction every summer, so it will be like normal.
The Fountainhead museum is well worth the trip, some really beautiful and rare cars, and some interesting early Alaskan automotive history.

I am in south Anchorage. No damage here at my place , All my neighbors are cleaning up all the inside mess. I have not herd of any building structure damage , just some broken exterior glass and everything inside in some cases. I have a large steel building with tall racking in it. All the racks are along the exterior walls and are are strapped . Was concerned of stuff flying off the shelves , but with my system , nothing came off. Been through a lot of these and am careful on how I load my shelves.
The highway north out of town has some issues as well as the overpasses and bridges , but DOT crews will have temporary repairs on the highways made by the middle of the week . Not so sure about the overpasses and bridges. They have engineers out there now surveying the possibility of structural damage .
With the current strict building codes , This has shown that the efforts and requirements paid off. I only know of a close friends cousins husband who had a rock fire place pull from the wall and fell over on top of him . Braking his hips and back. No fatalities reported which is a real blessing .

Well guys , your favorite hang outs " The Captain Cook " and " The Great Alaskan Bush Company " Made it without any major damage . Just a lot of wall hangings and items on the shelves found themselves on the floor amongst many other items .
Friends indicate that they will be cleaning up all the glass and mess for the next week. I had several friends roll around tool boxes find themselves face down on the floor or in to vehicles .A local sheet metal shop found their sheet stock flying off the shelves like horizontal guillitines . the local liquor stores found most of their stock on the floor.
As I was driving back to my shop from where flatrod works I found that many people took their turns passing through the non lited intersections. When I was in line at the gas station many were out of their cars just BS ing , making the best of the situation and patiently waiting their turn to fill up.

My brother lives in Eagle R. and had his kitchen and toy box tossed
pretty good. No major damage, and he made light of it, stating,
"Oh well, the shelves needed dusting anyway." The joke going
around - "If you were wondering what to get your friends or
relatives in Alaska for Christmas, most everyone requests new dishes!"
Amazingly, there were no fatalities.

Many of my friends who had interior damage , indicated that they just grabbed a shovel and started scooping up the glass whare and dumping into trash cans.
What a way to house clean ?

A update on the quake. We just had several more good shakers today. A elementary school , Fred Meyers grocery store , Auto parts store , business park buildings collapsed and several homes . Now after the big one on Friday and experiencing many small ones , these structures are starting to show weaknesses .
Another section of north bound highway out of town has sank.

The largest NAPA store in the state closed its doors . The building has some major structural issues and the city shut them down. This is not over. We still are having small aftershocks and causing issues from the first one.
