Default Head gaskets

Why can't you use a Synder high compression head gasket on a Brumfield head?
What is different ?

I like the copper/fake asbestos ones. They work on any head.

I wouldn't use one of the modern gaskets on a lawnmower.

A number of years ago when the modern head gaskets came on the market one was installed on my Vic with a Brumfield head. Soon after I went on a 1,000 mile tour. When I got back I went to change the oil and noticed part of the head gasket had delaminated and was sticking out about an inch under the water pump. I pulled the head and saw there were slight traces of carbon where the gasket was about to let go completely.

I have been told that these early problems have been corrected. However I have no reason to try one again when a FelPro copper gasket works just fine.

I just wish FelPro would again make the R-1 instead of just the R-3. The R-1 has a wider barrier between 1&2 and 3&4 for bores from standard to about 60 over. The R-3 is for bores of larger size.

Here is my guess as I'm not Mr. Brumfield. Since most times a change of head did not include a leveling of the block, he knew that if you used the recommended gasket and followed his instructions EXACTLY you would have a head that would work as advertised with no problems. If you used a gasket he did not recommend it was possible that this gasket would not allow for the non perfect block deck. I remember when he sold them he would have to post rebuttals to those that said something was wrong with his his Model A head. He would tell them offer and over to use the head gasket he recommended and each time the owner would say now it works.
