Default Shop Manual

Looking in the 54/55 shop manual today, and they don't even list the 272 engine. 279 and 317 but no 272.

Are you sure that's a Ford car shop manual?
The 279 and 317 are HD truck / Lincoln engines.

http://ford-y-block.com/Block%20identification.htm

Does it list the 239 or 256? Maybe it's an 'early' version of the manual???
.

The 54 car shop manual is an addendum to the 52/53.

The 55 car is a separate manual.

ebay has the 55 manual, either print or on CD. They should have the 52/53 with 54 addendum

People may not like ebay, but they usually have the goods, and usually at a decent price.

Ecklers (Mac's auto parts) lists the 1955 Ford car shop manual, #VB55 for $32.49. It is 344 pages. They also offer it on CD if you want to choose electronic form.
Most of the Repro parts suppliers offer shop manuals for just about every year.
If you have converted to 12-volts, maybe would be best to get their 1956 Ford car shop manual. It is basically same car, same frame and suspension, same drive train, but 12-volt electrical system.

1955 TRUCK had only the 239 and 256. The 272 was not introduced until the 1956 model run.

Tommy...I assumed you had a car.
The '55 F100 pickups had the big 239 Y-block carried over from 1954 cars in the late '54 model year. The early '54 cars and trucks had the little 239 Y-block that was cast at a different foundry. It was discontinued late in the '54 model year and had several differences from the big 239, most noticeably the smaller intake and intake ports closer together at the heads. The big 239 might be hard to differentiate from the 272 just by looking at it.
In 1956, the F100 pickups had the 272 Y-block carried over from 1955 cars.
During these years, heavy-duty series trucks may have had the Mercury 256 Y-block or a Lincoln 317 Y-block engine.
The 239 was Fords first attempt at an overhead valve V8 for marketing in the '54 model year. Lincolns 317 Y-block was introduced in the 1952 Model year and it is a completely different animal than the Ford Y-block.
The '54 239's, big and little is just what I call them and that is nothing official. Just a way for me to identify the early and late castings made at the two different foundry's.

I think you mean the big cam 239 EBU (DIF) and the small cam 239 EBV (CF).

1954 EBU - 239 Big Cam (Large Cam Bearings - 13T Dist Gear)

1954 EBY - 256 MERC Small Cam

1954-55 EBV - 239 Small Cam -Truck

1954-55 EBZ - 256 Small Cam - Truck
1956 ECG - 272

KULTULZ,

Is the '56 Mercury 256 a small cam or large cam bearing engine ?

From the above you posted, I'm not sure if you meant small or large cam bearings.

Thanks, Sal

The 54 MERC 256 EBY was a small cam engine as best I can pull out of cataloging. The MERC CHASSIS PARTS CATALOG has a superseded PN PREFIX of cam B5C which is light truck 1955 239 EBV which is small cam.

I need a bunch of additional info to track all of this down.

Sorry about that.

Thanks for all the info. I think I have a 55 272 ECG car engine, in my 55 F100, because of the location of the dipstick.

Don't thank me yet as I may be proven wrong ...

I need a 54 MERC SHOP MANUAL and an owner who is willing to provide CASTING ID info.

A good friend of ours offered me the chance to peruse his collection of SERVICE LITERATURE and like the dummy I am did not take advantage of it.

It has to be as I was exchanging with a person that had a 55 F100 and discovered his short was an EBY instead of the EBV-EBZ. So that right there convinces me the EBY MERC had to be a CF casting.
