My '39 pickup has a aftermarket water heater. The water hoses were connected to the head and a bottom water hose. Do I need to redo the hose the same way or can I connect one hose per head? I ask this and the former setup had the shut off valve on the head side and even with that valve closed the hot water got to the heater.

Clem, the heads are positive pressure, the water pump hoses are negative pressure. To maintain a flow through the heater, the heater inlet must be from the top, and return to the bottom. If the shutoff valve is indeed closed, there will be no pass through of hot water to the heater, but it may certainly become warmer than ambient over a long drive.

Just some thoughts...

flatheads run basically two block cooling systems joined together. Most heaters run off the passenger side. It will draw heat off that side. Reason there is an extra boss on heads to tap.

Interested in responses to returns.

So I need to make a hole in the bottom radiator hose and insert an adapter.

Yes, there is a special fitting for the lower hose.

Thanks JSerry. Carpenter doesn't have such a flitting. I'll plug the hose. Interesting I hear that most folks use the passenger side bottom hose as it looks better than hoses everywhere. I think I will use that side as I need to replace that water pump

Carpenter lists it as 91A-15160-A, Hot Water Heater Hose Fitting.

Clem do you have the heater installation diagram? It is not a very clear diagram, but might help. The top connector (outlet) of the heater core connects to the lower radiator hose (passenger side). The lower connector (inlet) of the heater core connects to the passenger side head via the shutoff valve.

MY heater as the pipes side by side. The passenger side water paump needs replace so tht is where the heater pipe will go
