1936 Ford pickup door issue
I am trying to install the window channel felt fastener clips. On one of my doors, the holes for the clips are oblong - unlike the other door. The oblong holes are smaller than what the clips require, and I don't know whether I should try to make the holes larger or try to find a smaller clip. The clips I have need a 1/4 inch hole. I have "no idea" how a person would even be able to enlarge the hole. My door is already painted and I'm trying to be careful. Can someone tell me if there is a smaller clip available and how I could purchase them? I've tried to attach photos, but can't get it to work. If there is another way to send photos, please let me know. Thank you....

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
I have found that there are several different style doors for 35-36 pickups. One of the differences is with what you’re dealing with now. One style of door uses the felt strips that you are trying to install using the square clips. The other uses rubber guide that fits into the oblong hole that exists in your door. You just need the rubber guides and you won’t need to modify your painted door. I’m not sure if they’re sold individually, but they do come in the window channel kit. If you can’t find them individually, let me know. I have some new ones that I didn’t use.

I thank you very much. I didn't know about the different doors. I will let you know if I don't find those pieces.

I looked in my parts and found these. Vintique Part #B-45830. Not sure if this is what I need? If so, which way do they go? And do I still use the felt strips with these rubber pieces? Also, can you tell me how I go about getting glass for my pickup? I do NOT have the patterns for them. nLAnmYvPTDOgY6rZTINNPA.jpg CtfyZZCJS7Std5w31A5fKg.jpg |

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
Shane, I would inspect each door carefully before you go any further. There were 4 different style doors for 35-36 pickups. The rubber bumpers (B-45830) were typical for 1935 doors, while the window channel felt was typical for 1936. Carefully look at the inside panel on each of your doors for the holes that hold the door panel trim in place. Some doors had 5 holes and others had 7 holes while others had an integral trim strip that held the upper trim panel in place. Here are some images showing some of the differences.

Don, my right side door has the 7 holes on top which is the third picture you sent. I'm not sure if I can use the felt molding because of the oblong holes??

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
Don, my left side door has the metal strip on the top that holds the upholstery panel to the door. I've got the felt strips on this door. Now, its ready for the glass. I do not have glass yet or the pattern for the glass. Need advice on how to get the glass?

The best that I have found for replacement glass has been Sanders Reproduction Glass

Shane, You have to make some decisions before you go any further. Do you want a truck with one 35 door and one 36 door? Remember also that your inside door trim panels will be different also.

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
I also have one 35 door and one 36 door with my pickup. It's too bad you already painted your doors. We could trade and solve a problem for both of us. I've always wondered what happened to the matching doors to the ones I have.

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
Yes, I agree. At the time, I didn't think it was a big deal having two different doors since the outsides looked the same. My original doors were so rotted out that I had to get better ones. I'm okay with what I have since this is going to be a daily driver for me. I thank you ALL for the great advice you've shared.
THREE QUESTIONS: 1) Can you tell me whether I am able to use the felt strips with the rubber bumper pieces for the oblong holes? 2) Do I need both the SLANTED rubber garnish bumpers & the rounded ones? 3) It says, the slanted bumpers need to be attached to the garnish, and the rounded bumpers need to be attached to the doors. What is the garnish? Do I need to purchase these? If so, do you know the part number? Thanks Shane |

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
That’s the thing Kube... access to be able to drill, file or most other means of modifying the slot to use the felt strips is severely limited. I’ll look at my doors today and see if I can come up with a solution, since I’ll be facing this challenge soon as well.

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
There is about a 3/4” gap that you have to drill multiple 1/4” holes perpendicular to that gap. I think the smallest 90 degree drill is going to be a dental drill but I would bet that it is still too big to fit inside the 3/4” gap. If you’re dead set on using the felt you may want to consider adhesive. Being that my doors are not painted, I have more, somewhat practical, options to alter mine. Your door being painted is probably your biggest issue. Maybe someone can chime in on if they think an automotive adhesive is a good option. Of course you’ll have to remove the metal clips from your felt. I’ll keep thinking on this one though.

Re: 1936 Ford pickup door issue
How about using a die grinder with a small circular carbide cutter to cut the holes? Might work.
