Default Rear Axle Identification

Hi everyone! I will say I've been an early Ford guy for a long time, but never messed with Model Ts much except to build a hot rod. I just started to acquire more and more T stuff and wanted to put one together. They are slowly growing on me!

I'm trying to ID a rear differential and haven't been able to find any guide or information on it. I've googled it a lot, and even used the search field on here and wasn't coming up with anything.

Can anyone point me in the right direction in how to ID Model T rear axles? Is there anything on the Model T Ford owners site that I didn't see?

Any help would be fantastic!

Thanks!

James

Post some good, clear pictures of it from different angles, showing the whole thing and also the details, here and on the MTFCA and MTFCI forums, and if it's Model T you'll soon know exactly what you have.

Thanks Steve, I appreciate the answer and help very much!
While I'd be happy to have someone ID the rear for me, I'm not necessarily looking for someone to do that, although thats the ultimate goal. There is not much to learn if someone just told me what I had without me knowing why that's what it is! Rather, I'm looking to acquire the knowledge to know how to identify Model T rear axles! I know a lot people just want an answer...Im looking for the way to acquire the knowledge to know how to get the answer! Perhaps that's what a little guidance from Model T guys does for me!

I will post some photos for those who like to ID things though, because thats what I like to do too!

Thanks for your help in advance.

The right side (passenger) is of the '15 era - no reinforcing ribs on the backing plate, the left side (driver) would be in the '17 - '25 vintage. Closed driveshaft bearing spool is in the '10 - '20 era. There are subtle differences in the spool but I'm generalizing.

For documentation of identifying features, my first choices are always the Model T Encyclopedia (the disk version is best) and the Rodda books. You may not find pictures of every detail, but you'll find a lot of them. I would also post those photos on the forums and ask what the identifying differences are. Some folks might even reply with pictures.

Ahaa!! Thank you so much gentlemen... that's what I was looking for...all of the great literature. I have the Green Bible, but I knew there had to be something for Model Ts.

I noticed that the 2 sides of backing plates were different, so I'm guessing with the right parts a lot of the pieces were interchangeable just like the rest of Henry's cars and parts.

Thanks for the guidance on this!

The MTFCA home page has this link to written specs

Just open menu and click on rear axle and you get specs, documentation, but no pictures.

Thanks so much! Does the Model T rear Axle have ID numbers on them or Part numbers like the 28 and later parts? I've looked all over the axle tubes and housing and didn't see any numbers or stampings. Perhaps there is too much rust I'm not seeing it.
Thanks again for all of the help and references, I will be having those books sent shortly!

You'll find numbers on some parts, like spindle arms, but I don't believe there are any on the rear axle components.
