Modern high temp wheel bearing greese in a flathead
The rear wheel bearings in my 39 look like they were packed with a low temp grease which melted and slung oil all over the shoes and drums. Checked the bearings and they are good, just want to use a bearing grease that will not melt. What do you folks recommend and will the high temp grease for cars with disc brakes work?
Thanks |

Sta-Lube has a product you get at NAPA. Someone else will chime in with the correct name for it, unless I think of it before they do.

If the grease is slinging out, I would take a look at replacing the seals.

If the rear end is overfilled with oil or the inner axle seals are bad, the gear oil can get into the bearing grease.

Re: Modern high temp wheel bearing greese in a flathead
Rear wheel bearing grease for the old flathead needs to be a thicker stringy type grease due to the loose tolerances of this bearings rollers. Modern wheel bearing grease will not lubricate properly and has a tendency to work out of the bearing. Not sure what NAPA sells that would meet the type needed but they should be able to inform you. I'm using a Quaker State wheel bearing grease from a 2 # tub I got years ago from an antique shop petroleum product collector.

WestCoast
Just about all "parts men" have retired. We now have kids, searching a computer program, for parts they have never seen. They do not know what is on the shelves, or care. I hope the dealerships are better served. Bruce
