Default Speedometer drive gear stripped

My speedometer did not work, the cable is new, and when I spin the cable from the torque tube end with a drill, it registeres speed and counts miles. I took the housing down and found broken teeth and teeth missing. The speedometer cable looks fairly new, and well lubricated.

How does this gear break?

Any chance you tried to but a different gear in the housing than it was designed for? Housings and gears need to match.

Charlie; this is how I bought the car. The housing is marked "19", and it is a mid 30 car with 19" wheels and 3:54 gears, so I am assuming 19 is correct??

According to Bratton's catalog 3:54 with 19" tires should
use 18 tooth gear.

If someone put 18 gears in a 19 housing I don't think it would result in the problem you have. I have been told you could cheat a little with the housings/gears. I assume that your speedometer/odometer worked correctly prior to the current problem.

Looks like it may have been assembled with not enough gaskets and that the gear lash was too tight. Hopefully the mating gears on the driveshaft don't look that way as well.

I have double checked the rear axle and it is 3:78, not as I previously said 3:54.

The gear in the drive shaft housing looks good.

I am just at odds, as to what happened before I purchased the car. The speedometer/ odometer has not worked, since I have owned the car.

I was looking at Snyders, and also called Snyders, and they do think I should use the 19 gear.

The inconsistency does concern me.

Thank you all for the information.

Basically I have to guess that the previous owner had a Catastrophic speedometer cable failure, replaced the cable and gave up.

How does the speedometer drive gear shaft retainer, come out?

I think I would like to fix my broken gear.

Also, steel gear, or nylon gear?
