Default Brand New V.S. Rebuilt Carburetor

Hey Guys,

The mounting flange on my Zenith carb top is cracked. A JB weld repair worked for a few months but has since failed again and I think it is time for a new carburetor.

Most vendors will not sell a rebuilt carb without a rebuildable core, which mine is not. I may be able to find a vendor who will simply keep the core charge or find a cheap uncracked top on ebay.

Am I better off getting a brand new carb or a rebuilt original? Does anyone have any experience with the casting quality etc of a new Zenith carb? Are they better or worse than a well rebuilt original or about the same?

Thanks for any advice.

If you feel comfortable with it, you can braze or silver solder it for a permanent repair. If your not comfortable with that, I could do it for you. Post a photo of what you have.

Redtail,

Like Russ said, they can be repaired. Also, if your current Carburetor works well, I'd be looking for a replacement top before buying a complete Carburetor.

Regards
Bill

Put a "wanted" ad in. Stick with the original.

I have had good luck with rebuilt Zenith carbs, but I really like the new Zenith that we now have on our 29. For me it was well worth the money. Enjoy.

Thanks guys maybe I will try another repair before ordering a new/rebuilt carb.

I can weld so I assume I could figure out how to braze it up. The problem is that the crack extends down into the throat of the carb and it was sucking air in messing with my mixture.

I'll try looking around for a new top as well.

I'd have a top too but you'd have to come and get it! Post would be a killer.

I've read bad reports on both . If its rebuilt , it depends on who rebuilt it .The new repro Zenith carburetors are pretty expensive . I prefer to overhaul my own carbs .

Hey Guys here are some photos of what I'm working with. Looks to me marked Zenith-1 but I don't know if that is correct for a 1930 Sport Coupe. As an aside, it has been leaking gas out of the weep hole indicated by the pencil - I assume that is the float? I have not had much luck getting the float height dialed in. Thanks!

Yup, Another wrong size bolt installed...That is an easy fix.. On 2nd thought in looking at the gas inlet on the side bowl top, it looks like leaks just looking to happen !! Get another Original top for it, & the correct size bolts for it..

That carburetor is for a late 1931 indented firewall vehicle. The tops are harder to find and there for more expensive. You will need to get all of the glue out of the steel before you try and braise it.

I had a beat-up leaky Tillotson on my '30 town sedan from the day I bought it. On the day I got my first social security check, my wife and I drove to Snyder's and I bought a brand new Zenith. It's given me 8 trouble free years. Glad I did it.

Contact Tom at the Model A Ford Works in Portland Or. We can set you up with a new top that would be more correct for 1930. Send me a Pm for the number or just google us we are just over on N Ainsworth.

Will do, thanks for the tip.

I will also start looking around for a correct carb. I had no idea this one is not right for my car. Thanks again all.
