Ford likely used ash, oak, or maple but any hard wood that's easy to form would work. Eucalyptus varieties would likely be OK if they are the easiest thing for you to source.

I used apitong for all the wood structures on the tonner including the bed wood. http://www.woodsunlimited.com/faq.html In addition to being a strong dense hardwood its both weather and insect resistant. Our supplier sources apitong from Indonesia and the P.I. so it should be available in your neck of the woods.
