Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The '56 Lincoln is one of my all time favorites. In an era known for sometimes over the top styling, Ford kept the Lincoln elegant and understated while maintaining a futuristic theme. The transmission is nothing more than a heavy duty Ford-O-Matic, but few if any Fordo parts will interchange with the Turbo Drive. A short web search did not turn up any rebuild kits so it looks like you'll need to buy the needed parts individually. You might start here: https://www.lincolnoldparts.com/ with a phone call. Another possibility is Kanter Auto Products: https://www.kanter.com/index.aspx . eBay is another possibility, and these guys: https://www.fatsco.net/. Also: http://www.autotran.us/fmkits1.html . Good luck!

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
A few more places to inquire about transmission parts...
http://www.vanpeltsales.com/ http://www.nwtparts.com/ One more, they may be less likely to have parts for that year and model, but it won't hurt to ask... https://www.tee-bird.com/ . |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The Turbo Drive appears to be a medium case Ford-O-Matic so this may be what he needs:
http://nwtparts.com/index.php?route=...product_id=120 Contact Northwest Transmission Parts (http://www.nwtparts.com/) to confirm before ordering.

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
100% agree. The more expensive or difficult a part is to find & buy, I definitely prefer to call or contact someone personally to make sure they have what I need.
They often can also offer suggestions for other needed parts I may not be aware of, or at least offer contact information for other suppliers who can provide parts they don't have in stock. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The Medium case Ford-O-Matics came out for heavier duty use beginning in the 1955 model year. Initially, they were used behind the 341 powered Lincoln cars but were geared up for use behind the Ford & Mercury 312 as well as the Lincoln 368 applications in 1956. Lincoln changed over to the new large case transmissions in 1958 when dual range Cruise-O-Matic transmissions came on line.
Ford Motor Co. used different transmission names for different Brand named cars like Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln. I guess Lincoln-O-Matic had no ring to it so they called them the Turbo Drive Transmission when installed in the Lincoln cars. They are very similar to the Mercury and Ford medium case transmissions in those years before the Cruise-O-Matic name took hold for Ford and Mercury cars and Dual range transmissions became the normal use unit. Lincoln kept the Turbo Drive name for a long time but there was also a Multi Drive unit used in 1958 through 1960. A lot depended on what engine application was chosen. Fatsco and Northwest would be the two to check first for parts. Find the factory manual for the Turbo Drive in Lincoln applications so you can have all the information needed. The bad thing about Lincolns and some of the other FoMoCo automatic equipped cars of this era is that the engine has to be removed to get the transmissions out in many cases. Any mechanic can overhaul these old transmissions but they are not common so the mechanic would need all the information they could get to be able to do a good job of it. These units are not like the modern types in a lot of ways. Soft parts like gaskets and seals should be available but hard parts are a different story. They are out there but it may take time to locate them if any are needed. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Kanter is a little bit expensive but he often has parts you can't find elsewhere. Just my opinion. You should also get the repair manual for your transmission.

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
I'd recommend Northwest also, and they are all expensive, but better availablity at Northwest.
I hope everything comes out alright. It's hard enough now to find a transmission specialist in the USA that is familiar with the old Ford-O-Matics. Make sure you loan the transmission shop manual to your mechanic who is doing the work. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
With the old transmissions you sort of have to take what ever is available. I've heard of folks having stack up problems with clutch plates due to different thickness. This can lead to confusion so it's important to order from some outfit that can back up what they sell. O-rings are another thing. Some of the Borg Warner designs have some flat or square/rectangular cross section o-rings and some sources sell the round cross section types.
There are a few guys that specialize in the later Thunderbird transmissions and they should know of any substitute parts from later transmissions that can be used in older units. It pays to reach out to these folks sometimes just to find out if there are any tricks to the trade. Last edited by rotorwrench; 09-22-2021 at 07:59 PM. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Wow, nice Lincoln, 56yblock! I agree with Dobie on the styling: rather subdued compared Cadillacs and Chryslers of the era, but the '56 Lincoln still had that bold late '50's American luxury car look. Very distinctive. The low front wheel wells never caught on with other luxury brands, but I think they're cool...they help give the car its sleek look. Congrats!

Mark II cars are valued more highly due to the rarity of the model but the Premier is a close 2nd in my book. Folks with Mark II cars ask about transmission swaps now and then. I would go with the AOD myself but the Turbo Drive is OK as long as parts are still out there. * had 1956 on the mind for some reason and failed to proof read. The '52 thru '55 were somewhat copied from the 52-54 Ford/Merc bodies except the 4-dr sedan top and the '55 Linc upper rear quarter. In '55, Linc kept the old juggernaut '52-54 body-style pretty much intact, while Ford/Merc progressed on with the new body style and wrap-around windshield. It wasn't till the '56 model year that Linc copied the '55 top, windshield and back window. But the '56 Linc has a more streamlined and luxurious looking body exterior. My absolute favorite Linc of the '50's was the '52 Cosmopolitan that had that stainless trim over the scoop on the rear quarter that makes it look like a rocket ship. While the '49 Caddy body design might have been revolutionary in it's time, they pretty much kept it unchanged through '56. It does appear that the '56 Linc copied the idea of the dropped front wheel opening from the '49-'56 Caddy. And it does make the car look pretty slick. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Dave, for '57 it looks like Ford succumbed to the tail fin and chrome craze with the Lincoln. Tail fins were a styling touch they avoided except in that one instance. They ruined a design that borders on timelessness. The fins almost appeared tacked on as with the '56 Studebaker Hawks, but Stude made it work. The Lincoln looks like something George Jetson would drive. And they ruined the front end treatment with the quad headlights that also look tacked on. Total Lincoln production for '56 was 50,322, for '57 that dropped to 41,123, so I'd say public reaction to the restyle was less than stellar. I'm betting Bill Schmidt had to be dragged to it kicking and screaming if indeed he had anything to do with it. If it were me I would have quit.

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The 1957 change was Lincolns's last hurrah for sharp tail fins on a rounded car but added the distinctive dual vertical mount headlights. It certainly got busier lines and trim. Most of the Ford and Mercury cars went square that year. The Thunderbird went through it's last change for the baby bird era before it too went box.
1958 went to a mix of square and round that a lot of folks ran from. The Lincoln's popularity took a nose dive for a time. They were different but likely too damn different for a lot of folks. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
It could be a leak on the rear band servo or some other mechanical reason on the low reverse set up. Adjustments and pressure checks should be done per the Turbo Drive instructions but band tools are likely non existent. Most band adjustments can be done with a modern torque wrench as long as you can find out what the torque specs are.
Pulling the pan will give you an idea of what condition the transmission is in. If there is a lot of metallic material in there then the rear clutch pack may be shot. Color and consistency of the ATF should still look relatively clean and have no odor of burned material to it. That rear clutch pack is what operates reverse gear in unison with the rear band. The rear band holds for both low and reverse gear but the front clutch pack is for all forward gears only. The front band holds for 2nd aka intermediate gear only. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Bands are out there but they don't often give problems. The transmission is a medium case version of the Ford-O-Matic/Merc-O-Matic and they all use the same rear band in that time frame. They can be relined so there should be no problem getting a good one on an exchange.
If the car will operate in low gear but not in reverse then it may not be the band anyway and may still be serviceable. It will have to be disassembled and cleaned to tell what all is going on in there. Clutch packs and seals are generally all that is needed but an inspection will tell if you need further hard parts. Keep in mind that these share parts with the Thunderbird and Mercury cars in that time frame even though there are some differences. There are several good Thunderbird transmission guys out there if a person does some research. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Pull the pan and have a look. That will tell you if there has been a failure. Burned smell and dark fluid is not a good sign.

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The ball joints I could deal with, but I think I'd be looking at installing an AOD and a modern ignition and carb to improve gas mileage. We're talking about a car that got maybe 10 to 12 mpg on a good day.

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
The front band 1 15/16" width (possibly with offset or centered lugs) is medium case only but was used in various applications from 1955 thru 1966 so it includes Cruise-O-Matics. The rear band 1 5/8" (with 2 different sized lugs) was used in both small and medium case models from 1955 thru 1974 and also includes COM & FMX transmissions. These will both likely be relined exchange only due to the lack of reproduction parts.
The link that Kultulz posted has bands listed and prices posted. I can't vouch for their product but it gives a person an idea on what they should cost plus any core charges. It also gives part numbers so they can be verified through the parts manuals and possibly be found NOS from other sources. Last edited by rotorwrench; 10-23-2021 at 10:43 AM. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
According to the Hollander interchange manual, the starter is the same on all Fords, Lincolns, Mercurys and trucks for 1956 is the same.

Try Northwest Transmission Parts. They may have hard parts you need, but they will likely be pricey.

If a shop is doing the work and they're giving you any kind of warranty, ask them so you don't void the warranty. If you're doing the work ask the place that's supplying the parts, in case there is a compatibility problem. The shop that rebuilt the Fordomatic in my '55 said to use Mercon transmission fluid. It's the most chemically similar to the original Type A, which was discontinued decades ago. . Last edited by dmsfrr; 01-23-2022 at 02:14 PM. |

The OP is in France so any recommendation they will give will most likely be an EURO lubricant.
MERCON V is the correct fill here. |

Re: 1956 lincoln premiere
Based on my experience having a shop rebuild my tranny, I would not ask for their opinion. The warranty is the least of your problems if it starts to damage itself. Tell them firmly that it should be Dex/Merc as stated previously, unless they have replaced the bronze plates etc. Shops don't rebuild fordomatics these days so unless they're truly a specialty shop, theyre out of their element. They also wont bother to open the manual. Rather they'll treat it like "other automatics" (bad move) and be inclined to use Type F cuz F = Ford or 1940s style hydraulic oil.

That was used in MT of the period and has been upgraded several times since then. Look for EURO that has the same SPEC NO. (if there is one). CASTROL should offer it. EDIT - GO HERE - https://www.castrol.com/en_us/united...nsmax-dex-merc .. and discuss with the re-builder. I would think it is available in FRANCE. HERE - https://www.castrol.com/en_us/united...nsmax-mercon-v ... is their MERCON-V equivalent. Last edited by KULTULZ; 02-01-2022 at 04:04 AM. Reason: ADD INFO |
