Wrong dipstick
I changed my pan gaskets and put 4 qts. of oil in through the distributor shaft hole. When I pulled the stick only a drop was showing on the end. About what should the level indicate on the stick with 4 qts? The engine hasn't been started yet.

Re: Wrong dipstick
The suggestion is to put one quart there. How long did you wait to check it?

Re: Wrong dipstick
If the dip stick you are using indicated correctly in the past, then there is nothing wrong with it. However, if you changed dip sticks, then I would be suspicious of the replacement one.
There is no harm putting 4 or more quarts of oil into the distributor hole. The oil will overflow the dams in the valve chamber. Some of the oil will go down into the oil return pipe and some of it spill out into the timing gear case. All of the oil will eventually fill the connecting rod troughs and the crankcase, but it will take more time to do so.

Re: Wrong dipstick
When I just changed my oil, I put about 4 qts in and a drop showed on the stick. Added about 1/2 qt and the level showed to the full line. About because I was filling with a 5 qt container!

Re: Wrong dipstick
Model a holds 1 imperial gallon (1.2 us gallons). the 0.2gallon remains in the valve chamber and dipper tray on oil change.

The Model A Instruction book (owners manual) shows the engine oil pan capacity as being 5 quarts. If you start with a dry sump and dry dipper tray it will need 5 quarts. When changing the oil with a dry sump and a full dipper tray, it will need only 4 quarts. .

Re: Wrong dipstick
This was a recent extensive topic either here or on VFF, can't remember which. Nor can I remember the measurements.

Re: Wrong dipstick
When I added the oil to the distributor opening I figured if 1 quart was good enough to fill the dripper tray 4 would be better, after a while the level did come up on the stick to the approx. point of 1 qt. low.
