Recently purchased a 1930 Tudor that hadn't been out of the garage in 50 years. I pulled the engine, opened it up and went through it checking everything and setting clearances where needed. Engine looks very good. Put the pan on last night and was patting myself on the back for a job well done when I spotted the oil pump still sitting on the bench

Dang I hate it when I do a stupid human trick.

Show me someone that say's he never made a mistake and I'll show you a liar. We are all human and humans make mistakes. I only get upset when I make the same mistake twice. It means I didn't learn from the first.

I thought I made a mistake once, but I was mistaken.

When I was a kid, we left the left bank rocker arm assembly out of a 57 olds. We drove around for a few minutes, trying to figure out what was wrong . When we drove back into the garage, there it was sitting in plain sight. Duh!

Gregg (RIP!) wrangled a 396 Chev, with a BIG Moroso sump, into his "68 Chev-ll Nova. Looked at the bench & spotted the oil pump pickup pipe/screen! +*%#%%#%%+*^**
"Somehow" he got that BIG sump off & on, with the engine in the car!!

I hate it when that happens. and it happens to the best of us. Pull the pan again, install the pump and move on.
Don't beat yourself up over it, and I would bet it will never happen to you again.

My only thought having screwed up oh so many times is, I am glad for you that you saw the pump, running to start it would have been a disaster.

Dont feel bad, we have all been there done that.

You don't really know what "stupid" is until you have bolted a Model A carburetor on BACKWARDS! It will fit either way, ya' know. Kinda' hard to hook up the fuel line and accelerator rod when the carb is facing the wrong way, though. It's even worse if someone is watching. And someone ALWAYS seems to be looking over my shoulder when I do something stupid like that.

Put the differential in and had it all ready to bolt together and remembered that the inside of the u-joint cover bell was not in place. I now remember to look for little things like that.

Well I put water.... and oil in it this morning.
Started up and ran like a champ.
Funny how something as simple as an oil pump can make such a difference.
