Default 29 gas gauge rebuild

I just started looking at the parts that I had to rebuild the gas gauge for the 29 Tudor. I noticed that the glass lens that I took out of the old gauge was different than the new one from Mac's. (The old lens has a bubble in the center to magnify the numbers on the gauge)

Anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Also, the new cork float seems too long. The gauge wire does not fit all the way through the cork float. The old float had a indent on one end so the wire went all the way through the float. See pictures

Don't use the cork float, use the neoprene.

Use the old lens or let me have it. Just kidding, but I'd use the old lens.

Use four O grade steel wool to clean up your original lens and re-use it.

Cut a thin slice of cellophane tape to place across the center of the ORIGINAL plate, then spray it with flat or semi-gloss black paint, then remove the tape. Comes out perfect. For sure keep and use the original oval lens and plate.

Will that chip in the lens cause it to leak?

Problem with the old lens is that it is chipped and it has what seems to be a piece missing (or maybe it is supposed to be that way???)

Both my cars had cheap re-pro gages, with a plastic window, that turned BROWN, melted & hung up the gage & leaked GAS!--A cheap repair kit fixed them.

Use the cork gaskets for the original lens and you should be OK.

The cork gasket set with one or two brass slip washers is the best set to use.
