I looked at some 1934 1.5 ton rims that I have and there is a small notch at
2 o'clock and at 3 & 9 o'clock there is a narrow area where the ring fits
in the groove on the rim.

Okay, another possibility is the Kelsey Hayes or Firestone “AR” three piece. There would be a very thin locking ring down between the base rim and side ring. Generally found on GM trucks, but I might see the small locking ring inside the side ring in your picture. I’m useless posting pics here but if you do a Google Image search of FTE or the Stovebolt sites and look for Kelsey-Hayes or Firestone AR old style you’ll find pictures. Stu

The You Tube shows how it’s done on the Firestone RH, but won’t be too helpful on an AR. One difficulty for me is seeing clearly on my phone what you have here. Deflating the tire and breaking the bead free is the first step no matter which rim/ring design you have. Stu

Edit - it might also be helpful in identifying the wheel to flip it over and look for the five digit Budd number on the inner face of the center disc or on the rear rim lip opposite the valve stem. It you find the number I can look it up and tell you the rim/ring design. If it is K-H there won’t be a number. Stu

Well easy peesy. Just break bead. Pound ring down. Look for slot when rust seperates. Use pry bar to pry that side of ring away from rim as you tap other side down. Once to side clearance reliefs show up. The ring will rotate on these and pop right off. HAAAAA. The clearance are offset. I'll show a pic series tomorrow

While the video on youtube is good, it was only the second one he had done. If MyTwoFords could make and post a video showing a more finessed technique that would be great.

I did this some years back, if the rims are in good shape and not all rusty removal won't be to much of a pain. If the rubber is hard and or there is some rust you will likely need to break the bead with a sledge like this type and then work the ring off.

Take care not to bend or damage the lip. Inspect the ring and the rim edge where it fits before reinstalling. Those edges keep the thing together, if they have been distorted or rusted to the point where they will not hold, don't use them.

When you put them together place the ring over the rim at an angle so that the slots on either side just clear the rim and then knock the ring down. Keep your fingers away from things.

When I reassembled mine I checked tube alignment, then filled with a small amount of air to "tighten" things up. After that I place the tire under the bed of the truck and filled it with the needed amount to get the ring to snap into place. If anything failed the ring would fly up and hit something under the bed of the truck and not me.

Do a visual inspection to make sure that the ring has seated fully and correctly all of the way around the rim before mounting it back on your truck.

Good luck. Howdy GB

Yes, you had the good fortune of having Goodyear style split locking ring/rim combos. Our original poster is not so fortunate. Studying his picture doesn’t settle the question of which ring/rim style he has, while wheel parts numbers would do that. I think it most likely he has the Firestone RH and hasn’t yet broken his bead and found the inner ring indents, etc. If doing the job himself isn’t in the cards there are old tire techs at work that can do the job for him. Check post #11 above by original poster.
Sounds like the task has been accomplished.
