Sorry, but your engine doesn't have any freeze plugs unless it has been replaced by an engine prior to 1941ish. I hope it's not cracked as well.

X2 with Ralph. Pretty tough to diagnose with what you're giving us. Pics are your friend and I'm not familiar with flathead freeze plugs. Plenty of people shopping for "it froze" plugs though. With the limited info that you're providing...head gasket or crack in the block.

Is this a newly rebuilt engine? There is a possibility that there is some coolant leaking from one of the head stud bolts and is slowly leaking down the side of the block giving you a false indication that the block is cracked. I am assuming that this condition has just developed and there is no freezing temps here yet in the lower 48.

Freeze plugs and -52 sounds like it´s a 215 L-6 to me...

It wouldn't be a flathead with a 215 for sure. Still a good motor, just not a flat one. If it's a flathead V8 then you could have a head leak or possibly a crack into a center exhaust port. A freeze crack in the lower pan rail can leak outside the oil pan but most of the time it fills the pan with coolant. It's kind of rare to have a crack in the outer wall of the block but I won't say it can't happen.
