repo shifter stick repair

On a recent tour my 2piece repo shifter stick started to unscrew. I don't have an original to restore. I'm thinking of removing the transmission top so I can unscrew it all the way, then screwing it back in along with some JB weld or Lock tight. What do you think?

If it was mine I would get rid of that stick, and put a original one in.

I spot welded one in position, boot covered weld. Original is best if you can find one.

My repo shifter actually snapped while driving. I called up Bert's and ordered an original one. I had to restore the ball, but it is a much beefier piece of metal than the repo. I would call up Bert's and get one from them.

I'm sure all the vendor's have the same supplier but who did you purchase your from? There was a recent thread discussing this.

Might try Lock-Tite RED.

Vermins' shifter was painted GREEN! Stripped it & it has BEAUTIFUL chrome plating, over a TOTALLY pitted surface! It looks quite NIFTY! It matches my OOOOLD FACE :-)

I would always use an original stick,remember there are 2 different ones,angles are not the same.

Did not know this. Maybe that's why my knee gets caught between the steering wheel and shift knob when in first gear.

YES, & you CAIN'T get your foot on the BRAKE!!! I have a fairly potent Propane Torch, I heated Minervas' shifter at the fat end & "custom" bent it IT ONLY TOOK ME 3 TRIES, TO GET IT "PERFECT"

You can buy a correct nickel replated original lever with the ball welded-up outright from Craig Riker shipped from the Toledo, Ohio area.

Yes, and with foot on the brake at a stop light, when I put it in first I can't let off the brake either. Did you heat and bend the shifter while in the car? Someone told me to cold bend it.

I'm chicken to try...

Nope. Your knee gets trapped because the shifter is leaning a little toward the drivers side. When in first gear there is no room for your knee to get past. How do I know? The shift lever in my 29 tudor had the same problem. My knee would get trapped even after I moved the seat back 3" with special seat brackets.

I applied a little force to the shift lever and now it leans a little towarde the passenger side. Problem solved!

Glenn, Didn't mean to high-jack the thread...

I just grabbed it near the top and applied some force. It bend easily (which is probably how it got moved toward the drivers side in the first place). Try it. If it doesn't move easily you can always add heat, but I don't think you will need it.
