Anybody else building/built a "trunk" in their pkp?

I'm building a small storage area at the rear of the bead of my 36 Fordy pickup. Due to the "tweaking" required to use a 1936 car front end on a 1940 pickup, the bed got shifted to the rear a bit and we're building a little hideaway about 41 inches long that JUST fits my lawn chair which I did NOT measure beforehand! I always prefer to be lucky versus good!
Here's the truck. Trunk will follow when returned from fab helper. It fit perfect in test last night before we do final welding of the ends. What have others done for a means to open the storage area? We're planning to use a vinyl or cloth tab that is stapled to the bottom of the lid; hoping for less leakage when it rains. Any other ideas? What have you built?

The chopped 40 pkp is mine and runs 302/C4. IT has the best chop I've seen on 40 pkp. Chopped FOUR inches and the top is NOT stretched! Still don't know how they did it but wish I did! The cute Vicky belongs to fellow club member, Bad Bob, who builds all the "Bobby Built" vehicles you've seen in the magazines.

Al, you must be driving people crazy with the 36 "Deluxe Pickup", many of us have watched this one being built. Very nice work and a super interesting idea. LouB.

Al, I have a S.S. box that I plan on bolting down through the frame in the P.U. box mounting bolts to carry the misc. stuff. Friend made it up years ago. Never had a water problem as it has been in several P.U. s kc

Well, it's painted and IN the truck. Fits perfectly! Now to decide just where to hinge the top plywood sheet for best effect to keep out water. I'm thinkin a hinge just ahead of the edge of the front flange will help keep water out as it will have to get over the flange to get into the trunk area. I'll put thin foam rubber around edge of flange to help keep out water. Still figurin'. Al

Spent the day doing body work on the rear fenders. My pal George gets all the credit for improving the looks of the fenders and the cab corners. Another pal, David came by to slice the top floor of the bed and add the hinge and strap for access. It works! Pics to follow when I get time. More body work on the schedule for tomorrow. Tired Al

Very nice pickem up,now you need a cute roll pan. Not one of those square corner ones. Great looking project.

My 1934 pickup doesn't have a spare tire well/bracket like most '34's have. Since I'm running bias ply tires and tubes I feel nervous without a spare tire. So I built a spare tire and tool box out of solid oak. It is essentially a big drawer. Of course, it really takes up a lot of space in the bed but I can still carry the car show items.

Thanks for sharing and showing some of your approaches to addressing storage needs. Chet Chambers also shared his trunk (literally) at the front of his bed that fits nicely below the sides of the bed; thereby leaving the lines of the pkp undisturbed when viewed from the side. Anybody going to share more examples? I'm deep in bodywork on rear fenders and the bed if full of running bds, etc. so pics of my new hidden trunk are being delayed. Hope to have pics before long. Keep thinking. Al

Sorry for the delay but have been working hard to get pkp back together to go to York Wednesday. Finished blocking and painted both rear fenders and cab corners and reinstalled running bds. Also installled new Bob Drake turn signal kit (like they use my car for in their ads!) and it actually went very quickly... a pleasant surprise for a change.

Pics show the finished "trunk" with a yellow access strap. Note from side shot that bottom slopes to the rear where the both corners are modified for drainage.

You can also see the fabricated adaptor that allows the use of stock 1936 Ford car rear bumper brackets. Dick Spadaro is bringing me a new rear bumper to York.

I mounted the license to the outside of the trunk.

I used a add on trunk from a off topic 35 Chevy (yeah i know) and used it in the back of my father's 37 Chevy truck. It looks fitting as well as useful as a battery box and tool storage for long trips.
