Shackle End Bars "Coined" dog bone ??????????
I see that the Judging Standards have changed and now show a dog bone style shackle end bar but the picture in the JS is not very clear as to what it looks like or the edge of same. I have detailed pictures of several different styles of these and needing or wanting to know which is correct. I am unable to load pictures here as when I do it says incorrect file extension. I can send the pictures I have to someone in the know as I want to have the correct end bars on my Jan 29 A.

Re: Shackle End Bars "Coined" dog bone ??????????
Dan,
Dudley Moordigian and I hashed this over ad nauseam a few months ago. I have several nice original dogbone shackle bars, thanks to Doug Clayton. He and some other were the ones that updated the JS's to include the "coined" dogbone shackle bars. Dudley explained that "coined" bars have rounded edged unlike repro dogbone shackle bars that have straight sheared edges. If you want to send me pictures of what you have, I might be able to tell you which is correct. There is a good section in Technically Speaking volume 9 about shackles including dogbone bars (attached). I am also attaching a picture that shows the shackle bars I got from Doug. Rusty Nelson |

Coining to me is 'cold forging'. i.e. a punch with a closed bottom die.
the punch under high pressure forms the part in the die. there may be a witness mark near the center of the part. shearing is a punch forcing the part through the die, leaving the shear marks on one edge of the part. |

Re: Shackle End Bars "Coined" dog bone ??????????
I had a dog bone Ford script shackle bar that I loaned to Doc Kalinka. It was misplaced by Doc and that one may never show up again.
First, does anyone else have a dog bone Ford script shackle bar? Does anyone have information on this particular oddity? Thanks, Dean |

1. pix from article by rob mills (sorry didn’t keep info on which club mag, month/yr etc.) 2. page from one of Doc K’s article (Jul/Aug 2009 Model A News) 3. close up of Doc K’s (probably Dean’s!) 4. some bones I’ve collected … no script and edges are different than Gary’s Since these were reportedly used Nov '27 to Mar '28, seems there should be more of them showing up! |

These are the different end bars I have. What is the opinion of those in the know for fine point judging on these?

In the first photo, the one on the far right, I'd say NO,...the rest look correct. In the second photo, the one on the top, I'd say NO again,...it just looks punched.. Dudley |

Re: Shackle End Bars "Coined" dog bone ??????????
The bars in Mr. Reece's pictures are not original coined shackle bars. As mentioned before, they should have slightly rounded edges. If you can see in the crappy picture I posted above, the short ends will actually have a slightly flat spot.

Rusty Nelson and I talked about radiusing the edges to make the aftermarket ones look right,...the aftermarket ones are thinner buy maybe .030". It just wouldn't look right.. |
