Re: vibration in my car
Under power or coasting?
Do you feel it mostly in the steering wheel, or is it more audible? |

Re: vibration in my car
If there is steering wheel shimmy, you need a proper front end alignment.
If a driveshaft or torque converter is out of balance, they will cause vibration, but I would think you would feel it at much lower speeds continuously. |

Re: vibration in my car
you may have lost a wheel weight. if you feel it in the steering , especially if it is mostly around 50-60mph. some times you can drive "out" of it, by going slower, or faster. check wheel balance before replacing any thing else.

Re: vibration in my car
It could be the bushing in the rear of the tail shaft housing, but the driveshaft needs to be pulled to see.

Re: vibration in my car
I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the original brake drums were way out of balance, balanced the drums and problem went away.

Re: vibration in my car
Could also be a cord separation or bulge in the tire tread or sidewall.

Re: vibration in my car
To start, I would focus on the u-joints.

Re: vibration in my car
Where can you find a shop that balances wheel drums??
I have the same situation as above, my wheels are balanced, my tires are fine, my u-joints are new, even the driveshaft is balanced. I have not checked? the torque converter. |

Re: vibration in my car
Jwawhite - I would think that probably an engine machine shop ( that balances flywheels , etc ) would be your best bet .

Re: vibration in my car
Some garages used to balance everything together by raising the tire off the ground on the car and spinning it with an electric motor and a balance ring attached to the wheel. I think this practice is long gone though.

Re: vibration in my car
Try a shop that balances big truck tires. These may still be balanced this way.

Re: vibration in my car
U joints don't have to have loosness to vibrate, they can become dry and stuck and don't flex, one needs to remove the driveshaft and make sure each joint moves freely in both directions.

Re: vibration in my car
9 times out of 10, a resonant vibration at a certain rpm is tire related. A tire can be in balance and still cause problems. I check them by rolling them off the car to insure they roll true. When you find one that flops over after rolling a few feet then you know you found the problem. Tires take a beating. they get flat spots from setting too much. They can have an almost unnoticeable ply separation that will show up with problems like this.
Most towns used to have at least one shop that had a dynamic rotational balance machine that rotates the whole wheel, hub, & brake drum or rotor on the car to get it all working together. The machines are still available but are expensive. You see them more at front end shops than at tire shops. |

Re: vibration in my car
Okay, having wasted time and money, I've come to the following conclusion:
I've seen each wheel on the car rotated while off the ground. The front wheels were rotated up to 60 + MPH, one at a time by a machine with a roller, electrical motor. The LF tire rolled smooth, hand on fender no issues. When the RF wheel was rotated, it is obvious there is an issue, the RF fender was hopping. The Operators opinion was the wheel is bent. I saw the lower inside wall of the tire with a wobble- I ALSO THOUGHT THE WHEEL WAS BENT. I have American Classic Wheels and went over to Tire Pros where I bought them and stated the rim was bent. The wheel was removed and placed on a Balancer Machine and spun, the rim is not bent! Just what is happening, besides time and money? Wheel was installed again and this time grabbed at 9 and 3 (just this Wheel off the ground) a good shake revealed worn out bushings at the Idler Arm. Perhaps this is the cause of my wheel shake at speed.... |
