Cast fuel bowl on '28-'29 cars: Rubber grommet in the fire wall?
Does the hole in the firewall for the cast fuel bowl get a rubber grommet or is it not needed?
Thanks, |

No. Notice there is a small dimple in the firewall that clamps/sandwiches the the bump on sediment bulb flange into the sheetmetal to keep it vertical and from rotating. When it is tight, the fumes are sealed from the cabin area. |

While on the subject of Cast Iron Filters, I assume the large nut at the bottom is suppose to come loose in the usual fashion.... I've tried everything, but it is stuck tight. Any ideas? Heating/cooling maybe?
Thanks |

You my be just wasting your time if it is like that, with rust !!. The rest of it will be to far gone (the threads) and pin holes in the body sides to use.

Seriously complicated machinery with tight fits which is rusted beyond normal disassembly can at least have a chance after a time in an electrolytic bath. Heating and cooling should help as well. (Don't quench!) Brass expands faster than steel or cast iron. An early 20th century riveted steam boiler of my ownership was about to have the gauge glass cocks cut out, drilled and re-tapped. The boiler re-tuber when questioned on this recommended heating the brass cock until nearly red and then let cool. "It should loosen them up." And dern if it didn't. And for pinholes - use Glyptol and paint the inside. Perhaps do the painting and run the paint into the threads a bit, and then screw back together? The cast iron bulb WAS reproduced - but not available now. The lower brass part and the four prong valve IS reproduced. Joe K

Thanks all. I did order a glass filter replacement, so I won't be using the cast iron... But I did want to get it open, just for the experience.
