Default 34 body to frame bolt set...where does it all go?

i bought the set from Roy, my goodness i cant believe how many fasteners Henry used. 18 short carriage bolts, 4 longer ones, and i see no square holes in the frame or body? 14 screws with tiny heads, 6 plain bolts, 2 longer plain bolts and a gob of concave washers wheres it all go? geez, i think my model A's have 8 bolts!!!

There should be old threads on this. My recollection is that there are over 50. The majority are 'vertical', and just a couple per side that are horizontal (below the front floor/toeboard).

Do you have the Wescott's diagram of the frame hole locations?

i have looked at wescott's drawings, but they do not tell the story about which bolts to use. the carriage bolts have me puzzled as we are not dealing with wood. i have to punch holes in the body welting yet, but hope to do the body drop tomorrow. this wreck will start to look like a car finally, and i gain back a garage stall as the frame and body are hogging two spots now.

I have a bad copy of a service bulletin page that might be helpful if you had the actual service bulletin. The diagram looks a bit strange to me, so not really sure what it is related to.

It is unrelated to the topic at hand as it is illustrates the location and type of the floor mat and carpet retainers for the various body types.

jseery, thanks for the drawing, i assumed all the extra holes in the floor were for the carpet, but seems like a lot of holes for that. davidg, what kind of fastener holds the rug down?

LOL, thanks Dave. Bad copy coupled with bad eyesight! Didn't think things looked right!

cas3,

If you can enlarge the illustration it specifies the type of fastener for each location. There were three different types of fasteners.

Oddly, the illustration excludes the cabriolet and roadster fasteners and their location, but they are the same as the phaeton.

Give Roy a call if you have questions. Most likely he will be the guy that actually answers the phone. Could be you received all needed for that yr kit.

Not that he will come over and install them. But will help, sometimes we have to figure it out.

He told me that 38 square bed bolts are not available anywhere. Best to save everything you can when removing them. Take pictures as you go. It's digital now, so its easy.

The 1935-36 bolt set I purchased from Roy had a frame schematic enclosed which showed clearly what went where. I just looked at his ad on eBay for the 1933-34 bolt set and it also clearly states:

"SIMPLE INSTRUCTION SHEET PROVIDED TO INSURE PROPER USAGE".

In the kit I received there was also a significant number of fasteners included that aren't needed for certain body styles. Also clearly identified.

well thats interesting Randy, i never thought about there being extras in the kit, or instructions included. the kit was bought a year ago and i usually act like a kid on christmas morning and open the package to see what i bought. then, it gets put some where in the shop where you would never think to look for it, and in some cases forget you already bought one and order another when its time its application. in this case, somebody, (we wont mention any names) may have thrown out the box with the instructions. i'll look around and maybe call Roy and count holes and hardware. thanks!

Not maybe; please call Roy as I'm sure that he will take you through what you need for your body type and where they attach as well as send you an instruction sheet.

There were square holes in your body's floor and sills originally, but likely they were turned into round ones when the original carriage bolts were reluctantly removed.

Hi all; Just for grins those bolts are the reason circle trackers liked the 33/34 over the '32s. The bodies stayed attached. Newc

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'd bet that the picture posted was not of a race, but a parade lap with every car they could scrounge up for publicity purposes. I was there, attending these kinds of races from '49-'50 at Rex Speedway (which was so of St. Paul) and Twin City Speedway in New Brighton from 1951 until I started drag racing in 1961. These were all well-attended popular events with the bleachers full for most events, especially Twin City. They would have two to four "Heat" races with 10 to twelve cars each, one or two consolation races, a "Trophy Dash", and a "Feature". Great Fun!

If that was indeed a real race and they occured "in every city of any size all over the US!", there wouldn't be ANY cars left for us. It's an impressive picture, though, just as the stagers intended it to be.

I agree that the photo is a pre-race show, but not sure what the point is. They are all early bodies in race form. They are just not all on the track at the same time during a given race. Maybe it's different in your part of the country, but everywhere I have lived every town of any size had a dirt track cars and supported a track somewhere fairly close by, still do. If you drive around Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Taxes (places I have spent some time) you will see dirt track cars setting around very frequently. All of the 33/34 bodies and parts I have collected over the years have been ex-dirt track cars. Maybe it's just a mid-US thing.
