Default Outside mirror 41-48 wagon

Anyone have a suggestion for outside mirrors for 41-48 wagons? I'm looking for one that is usable and screws into the door wood.

Tex, as you probably know, the swan neck, cowl mount mirror from Drake, Carpenter etc has been discontinued. I have been looking for one for a while now. I asked both at Hershey if they were planning a run, and both said not at this time. I would hesitate drilling any holes in your wood to mount a mirror but I understand your situation. If you really need to mount a mirror on your wood, I would check out a company called Hagan Street Rods, www.haganauto.com. They have a mirror line called "Fatties". The catalog has several mounting posts and mirrors. They are a bit pricy but they make a nice product.

Thanks I may sell you my mirrors which are new for what I paid if I decide on hot rod mirrors. When I bought them the driver's side was available and I had to get the passenger side from a private seller.

Tex, the passenger is useless, as it's impossible to see it from the drivers side. As I stated both Drake and Carpenter stopped selling the cowl mount mirror. They claim that there isn't enough demand. If it were me, I wouldn't drill holes in my wood! It's not like metal where you can weld it up and fill it with Bondo. Any attempt at filling a hole in the wood will show.

^^^^^^Agreed, I took the cowl mounted stock mirrors off my 41 because I could not see the passenger side unit at all.

I went with door mounted units, but that doesn't help you much.

How about a hinge pin mirror?

The upper hinge on the Station Wagon is recessed and not visible so a hinge pin mirror won't work.

How about using a peep mirror on the upper metal part of the door. I wouldn't drill into the wood.

The upper part of the door on a 41-48 Woodie is wood , not metal.

Take a look at the 49-51 Ford mirror that mounts on the door near the wind wing. They mount with screws.

Would a clip-ons like these work? You could always remove them at a show, if judges threatened to take away points.

Ritzy, you have to remember were talking about a Woodie. Station Wagon doors are totally different than metal bodied doors. Those "peep" mirrors will only work on a metal door edge and clamp on.

If you're more interested in functionality than aesthetics, simply attach an adhesive blind spot mirror to each wind wing. That was my "field expedient" fix for the non-functional right side mirror on my '40.

Guilty. Not familiar with those, but looking at pictures of woodies, I was wondering if they might fit on the windshield post? On second thought, that post is probably too thick though.

The windshield post is steel, the same as the passenger car, but it is thick. I don't see how they can be attached.

I can see the right one (RHD car) but not the left one. Brought them because the cowl stainless was missing, hard to get here and not available repop at the time. LH side is for "decoration".

I have a 46 Woodie with an interior mirror and the exterior drivers side. With these 2 mirrors I get around fine.

Over the 35 years that I have been driving my woodie I have been tempted to drill holes in my door to accomadate a better rear view. Can't bring myself to do it. Lately I put a convex mirror the same size over my cowl mount mirror. Not a 100% solution but my field of vision has increased quite a bit. It's a stick on available where they sell truck mirrors..Bill

I have the same set up as GaryTx and I'm very happy with it. For some reason Tex doesn't want to to use that type of mirror. The other issue is like I stated in my original post, is that the cowl mirror is no longer available from Drake or Carpenter. I agree with you Bill, once you drill into the wood it will always be seen. It's not like steel where you can weld it up and Bondo over it. I don't care how good a woodworker you are, you will always see a wood repair.
