Default 6V to 12V DC

I might be crazy but the tail/stoplight on my 31 Town sedan is dimmer than a politician, so I was thinking about adding some inexpensive LED stop lights on the rear of the car. I don't use the car at night.

I plan on mounting lights on the spare tire with a 6 to 12 v convertor and running a wire from the stop light harness. It can be done without any permanent modifications to the car. All I need to do is remember that it has positive ground so the wires will be reversed.

Does this make any sense?

I need to add that I am the opposite of a politician when it comes to spending my money!

There is a product called the BrakeLighter, a 12" long led strip. It attaches to the rear window using suction cups. Its made to work with 6 or 12 volt, positive or negative ground. Plug and play. Price is $60.00 I'll be giving it a try.

Could have a poor ground as well or corroded bulb socket or wiring

It has a 6 V bulb, the wiring has been replaced, and I cleaned the bulb socket.
Just want to warn the idiots that tailgate that I am stopping - even though it takes a while to stop.

check the grounds and use star washers instead of lock washers, "more better ground"

I assembled this light from "extra" parts and installed it on top of my spare. It has 15 RED LEDs in it and has a motorcycle brake light "flasher". It flashes quickly ~6 times then turns solid.

Blockhead, is you light a 6 or 12 volt? I had not thought of placing a motorcycle flasher on my 'third brake light'.

It is 12v. I got it on ebay. It is made by United Pacific. Works great. Fully adjustable. I mounted it down by the brake light switch. It REALLY is an attention getter. Similar to this one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Brake-Atten...item5d352b1a04

Ordinary 1129 bulb is 6 volt and pretty bright. Not sure of candle power, but much brighter than the #63 bulb. It does have a little larger glass bulb than a #63 so it may not fit in all enclosures, even though the bayonet base is the same as the #63. I use it for both brake and turn signal.

The 6V bright bulbs from Bert's are same size as original with a larger filament. I'm sure other vendors have them as well.

NHUSA:

I am no electrical expert, but it seems like what you are proposing to do should work with a minimum of expense. I don't know the cost of the 6 to 12v converter compared to the BrakeLighter. I installed the LED tail lights on my coupe that the vendors sell, and I had to put higher candle power bulbs in the cowl lights or other resistance for them to work properly. I don't know if that would be an issue in your proposed setup, but if you have any issues when you install the LEDs, that might be something to check.
