I believe it was a clearance issue. Presumably on the pitman arm and drag link. My car was apparently in a fender bender and has the original on the left and the later model on the right. Its fun to ask people to see the difference. Amazing that so few people can see it as its a big deal.

Interesting if it is fact.

To help others out (like me), please post pics of the differences or explain. Thanks.

Re: early 28 front fenders, why did henry change the design on them.
I don't have photos, but if you look at the area where the bonnet(hood) shelf ends at the rear, the curve where the sloped inner meets the shelf has a different curve. It is also where the valance panel (splash apron) is closest to the bonnet shelf. The change, according to the Australian JS's was late 1928 for USA and early 1929 for Australia. The JS's state that it was done for more clearance for brake rods and shock arms. Also according to the JS's, some extra reinforcement was added to the edge where the brace is bolted.
The obvious thing is that the pressed curve became sharper and closer towards the bonnet shelf on the later pressings. |

Is this what you're talking about? I searched and found this. Pictures show up when you're logged in.

These pic's are taken from above the Left Fenders on my 29 Coupe with a early style and the second pic is from the same angle above the Left front later style on my 29 Pickup

Re: early 28 front fenders, why did henry change the design on them.
There were three designs of front fender (not just two). The three designs are shown in the attached photos. Note the differences in the dimension of the flat area where the rear frame bolt is located.
It was Fred Gooding who pointed out this feature. I think d1 was used from production start into early 1928. D2 was used into late 1928.

amazing, never knew that there were three different designs. i'll have to check the left one i have and see which style i have 1st or 2nd. and i'm assuming that by the posts that the different design was because of a clearance issue?
