Picked up t170 for future use, have questions
I picked up a ford tremec 4 sp OD T170 transmission from a mid 80s truck yesterday.
I got it cheap and hope to use it in my 38 in the future. I haven't checked the numbers yet but it probably doesn't have the best od ratio as it was mated to a 300 I6. What do I need for a clutch, throw out bearing and pressure plate? I am slowly rounding up all the parts that I will need. Also what parts are need to convert the output to a torque tube drive shaft? Is there an adaptor plate that can be bought. I know that it is not a stock question but I think people on this site understand how to do the conversions better than over on the hamb. Thanks |

Re: Picked up t170 for future use, have questions
There are a lot of threads on this site that cover the T170 conversions. There are a few posters that make some parts for this. The RTS model is generally the one to find. Just put T170 in the search box and you will find a few good ones.

Re: Picked up t170 for future use, have questions
I have one in my truck, I think the OD is 36%. I running a 280 Ci "stock" flathead and the engine pulls great from 1500 up in OD. Just love it. I use a stock 10" clutch with the proper disk.

Re: Picked up t170 for future use, have questions
36coupe,
Below is a link to a gear ratio chart for the F-150 (T170) transmission. I recommend the overdrive ratio from the first transmission on the chart. Note that the two letters list in the first box for each transmission are found on a metal tag attached to the transmission case for easy identification. https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/attach...8&d=1325958600 If this link doesn't work, do a Search on T170. You will find a link that works in one of the posts on this subject.

I've been looking for one. I'd like to go that route instead of the T5.... Mark

I used the 1984-87 3 speed with overdrive in my avatar. I find them in U Pull Its with the straight six engines. $90. Found one in a 4 wheel drive
