Default 29 Tudor with bad vibration at idle

The 29 Tudor that I have been restoring is getting near the end. Today I moved the car to the lift so I could finish some under the chassis things. I noticed that there is a really bad vibration at idle (I mean the whole car vibrates so bad that I would be afraid to drive it!!!) As the rpm is increased the vibration goes away. I have no idea how the vibration is at different speeds because the car is not drivable yet.

The vibration seems to be worse since I installed the body, front fenders, running boards and hood. There does not seem to be any engine miss fire, but I will be checking for cylinder balance as soon as I can. (going in for back surgery on the 10th, so I will be unable to do much of anything for several months--lucky me!)

The engine is a reman from Antique Engine Rebuilding in Skokie, IL --the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing are new. Front and rear mounts were replaced with original type units.

I also did the run out procedure that is in the Les Andrews manual.

Where do I start?

With the engine upside down like in the picture, I hope you had clearance for the valve heads while turning the crankshaft around.
It looks like it's sitting on a flat piece of plywood.

I don't see anything in the instructions about watching for end play affecting
your readings. The engine should be vertical to help eliminate this.

Do you know how to use the spark lever? If your running advanced at an idle it will run rough. Are your flywheel and pressure plate balanced?

Yes--I placed two bolts in the block to hold it up off the plywood.

My first thought was the engine balanced? Not all engine rebuilders do this as standard in a rebuild. You probably need to verify this as many short blocks are not balanced.

If it was balanced, are you positive the flywheel and P/P are indexed properly to the crank flange. It was marked, wasn't it? While indicating the flywheel housing is necessary, it generally does not affect idle.

Brent; How do you index anything to the crank flange when the flywheel and pressure plate are new?? Mine are balanced with quite a bit of material removed from the flywheel (3- 3/4 inch drilled holes close together and an 1/8 inch deep. Jack

you said original mounts. Do you have the front mount real tight if so that will cause it. The nut should only be on far enough to get the cotter pin in.

Brent I have a "B" engine that has been balanced and still shakes excessively at idle even after trying a different flywheel clutch combination. I keep following these postings hoping someone will find the silver bullet. Daren
