Default 36 Fuel Pump

I'm going to install an electric fuel pump in my 36 Fordoor Humpback. I'm tired
of grinding my battery down to nothing every time I try to start her. She's my
driver so I just want to get in, turn the ignition instant it up and go for a ride.
So, I've noticed some people install the electric unit and set it up so they only
use it to start the vehicle after it's been sitting for a while and some bypass
the original pump all together. Any clear advantage to either method or is it
strictly a matter of preference?

Will appreciate any comments you all have concerning this issue as I'm ready to
uncomplicate this part of my enjoyment of owning an early Ford.

Probably just a preference, my '41 has both pumps, the electric is on a spring loaded toggle, I hold it on for a few seconds until I hear the sound of the electric pump change then the car starts right up. The only disadvantage of my setup is if the mechanical pump fails I'd have to hold the switch on to get home.

Just to add what corvette8n posted....I have pretty much have the same setup on my cars except that my toggle switch has a spring-loaded side and an "On" side. So, if I need to keep my electric pump running for a while (in the city) I don't have to hold the switch on all the time.

I believe I purchased the "momentary-off-on" toggle switch on epay! It's been probably 7 or 8 years ago. I will endeavor to do some researching (my old paperwork) to see if I can find something more definitive. Pat

I would appreciate it. I have looked and all I can find are ones that are momentary both ways. I did find one, but it was DPDT, which would work in a pinch..

Suggestion #2, I've had good luck with Shewman's check valve fuel hose. Stops fuel going back to the tank making the start harder. I can go about a week between starts without a lot of cranking.

I have an optima in my 36. I also have a later model fuel pump with a glass bowl. Even
though the bowl has gas in it she still won't start well. Most of the momentary toggle
switches have 3 terminals on Ebay. What's the reason for that?

Peter, My guess is you have 1 power wire to the toggle switch and 2 outs. 1 momentary and 1 constant out. Pat
