Liquid Wrench is what we used exclusively 50 years ago. I don't see it much anymore. Better marketing by WD40, I guess.

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
My favourite is whatever I happen to have handy. I have not seen a whole lot of difference in brands. There was one that did stand out a little over the years. It was in the old style drip can. One that had been sitting on the shelf for many years. For the life of me I can't recall the name now but it always seemed to get results. Unfortunately I don't think it is available anymore and the empty cans sell for more now as collectibles than they ever did when brand new and full of penetrating fluid.

Deep Creep, or PB Blaster is all I use. My grandpa used ATF mixed with acetone. That does works super good but then you dont have aerosol with a straw to squirt it with. Apparently beeswax melted into a warmed up bolt works reallly nice too, but I've never tried it.

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
Mouse Milk is popular in aviation. 50 plus years ago it was liquid wrench. I would sometimes work on a project before high school. Some thought it a new men's cologne

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
PB Blaster stays wet longer than many penetrants do, and it works good
The WD-40 Rust Release Penetrant spray works pretty good too. Click on picture to Enlarge

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
I use Kroil & PB Blaster. Have heard many good things about 50/50 ATF and Acetone, but never tried that.

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
i,ve been useing the 50/50 mix of atf and acetone for years . its as good as any other product. i mix it in a spray bottle works good as long as you don,t need to spray down. you need to shake it often and the atf is heavyer so it ends in the bottom of the bottle. when i notice the liquids to clear i add more atf to the mix.

I use Liquid Wrench from a can with a spout - inherited from my father. Not sure if it is still available?

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
Regular WD40 is a lousy penetrant oil. It has a thousand uses but not so hot with any of them except water displacement. That's what it was made or at Convair until a laid off employee bought the rights.

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
For the past 10 years I've been using 50/50 mix, better than anything else I used in the past. Not saying it's the best right now. But!! when it first cam out, I think it was a better product and the major producers of this type product had to rethink their product. Not sure of who thought of the 50/50 mix, probably just some putzer that had a few stuck bolts and didn't have anything handy around.

Re: Penetrating oil-what is best
If I have "all the time in the world", if I see a rusty screw that I plan to remove Next year or so, I will use chassis grease.
If I have less time, I will use chain spray for forklift chains. Rexoil from "RexNord" (German chain manufacturer) This is a product I think is superior to all other spray cans I have used, as it creeps AND lubricate. Rune Waltoft, Norway |
