1958 Ford Fairlane Spring Model?

Have any of these "revised" 1958 Ford Fairlanes survived? Notice the extra trim in the front scallop area. They were introduced partway through the model year to try and entice prospective new customers.

I broke the code last night regarding this trim. It was also available as a kit(s) in addition to actual SERVICE PARTS (I assume) as the TRIM LEVEL is cataloged.

I also discovered chromedidium headlamp doors so if you see them on a car, they may be OEM.

Below is a late production 'GENUINE FORD ACCESSORIES FOR 1958' advertisement.

The most startling -- and controversial -- change from 1957 was an elliptical rear deck indentation designed to improve panel strength. It also served to accent four oval tail-lamps (with the inboard pair in the trunk-lid), FORD's first departure from round units since 1952. Greater rigidity also prompted the addition of seven longitudinal grooves or "flutes" in all roof panels, including wagons.

Up front were quad headlights per industry fad and two ideas from the 1958 T-Bird: a phony hood air scoop, again for panel strength, and a wide, mouth-like bumper/grille for maximum air flow to the radiator core.

This is from an interesting read on the 1957-1959 FORD. A few things I didn't realize regarding the 58.

It's interesting, mercman, Chrysler offered what they called a "Spring Special" in the mid fifties in the US. I guess that was the thing to do back then, given that this kind of seasonal offering came from both Ford and Chrysler. I had a 1955 version in two door hardtop configuration (Windsor Deluxe.) I can't recall what other years - if any - the Spring Special was offered. It was basically just a cosmetic package, as I understand it. Chrysler had a specific two tone color scheme, with no choice of colors. In '55 it was a kind of a cream white with an aqua blue. I couldn't say if there were any special interior appointments for the package.

It makes sense in the US to have a spring promotional to help boost sagging interest in models that have been around for a while (they’re introduced late summer/ early fall of the previous year) but it makes me wonder: Isn't your spring in the southern hemisphere the opposite of ours in the northern hemispere? So spring for you would be September/October, right? Those are usually the months when our cars are released here. If you had a new generation/update of Ford released in Australia, would it typically be in Sept./Oct. like us, or some other time of the year?

That is interesting. From the article: "Ford had three objectives for its 1958 facelift... In retrospect, the result comes off quite well against that year's "Chromes-mobile" and bespangled Buick, but it was not well-liked at the time. That judgement is shared today by collectors, who consider the 1957 the most beautiful Ford of the decade, the 1958 the ugliest."


When I like the styling of a car, it's generally well liked by others, or at least appreciated as something that's unique and interesting. That's why I find it weird that other people don't like the '58 Ford. Now, most other Ford's from the fifties were attractive (some more so than others) so I can understand that the '58's styling is the least well liked of the decade because the competition from the other years is stiff. But it's still a nice looking car. I guess the problem is that '58 was just a bad year for styling for all car makers in general. Many Mopars still had the impressive big fin look, but they were just starting to enter their weird phase in '58...by '60-61 there was some pretty strange looking stuff coming out of Chysler. The Edsel was odd, but it didn't deserve it's reputation as the worst looking car of the era. That honor belongs to the '58 Buick that the article mentions. And most other '58 cars from GM were almost as bad.

I personally think 1958 was the best looking year of the decade for the two door Ranch Wagon and sedan delivery. I'd love to have a Ranchero from that year, too.

A '57 was my third car and I became a fanatic. Of course the 57 got a 58 hood in gray primer (added at least fifty HP).

But I always viewed the 58 as a bit extravagant with all it's bells and whistles. But lately I think I would rather have a 58.

But I also was uncomfortable with the 57 'BUG EYED LOOK'.

I think I am fickled ...

Not a Fairlane but a 58 Custom 300 Business Sedan, originally a Thriftmaster 6 now an FE, I believe there were 4 exterior trim packages for this base model.

In regards to the Australian Mainline ute from 55 to 58, in fact the latest build date I saw was April 60.
Clearly Ford Australia had a few left over bodies they wanted to get rid off. and were clearly still producing these through 59.
