Default Oil Filled Fan Hub Questions

I am working on my 8BA engine which has not run in a long time. I was cleaning the 6-blade fan and attached slotted bracket assembly on my work bench today. When I turned the assembly so the fan was in the up position, several teaspoons of oil ran out from around the shaft. Is this normal or is it telling me it wants a rebuild? I see a small screw which allows access into the hub and I assume this is where you add oil. How do you get the correct amount in?
No oil leaks out when the fan is down or vertical like it is on the engine.
Thanks - Mark

If you take it apart you will see how it works. See the link below for the information you need to know about the oil filled fan hub assembly. Probably isn't anything wrong with the one you have.

Mark,

Mac Vanpelt has some great info on his site on all things 8BA. Below is a link on servicing the 21A fan.

I just serviced mine. Used an old fashion plastic ketchup squeeze bottle that I got at wallyworld for 98 cents to get the transmission oil in. Worked perfectly.

I do not restore old Fords but build them to run long distance and at speed. I have always used Slick 50 in the fan hubs. That stuff sticks to metal surfaces and should you run out of oil, you will not burn things up. Before any long trip or about when I change the oil, I usually put a drop or two in the fan hub. You don't need much .....
