Default Aluminum cam gear side cover

i've built alot of Model A engines but never saw this before. The little cam gear side cover on this engine I'm doing is aluminum. The engine was always in industrial use, it was in an orchard sprayer. Everthing else is just like any A engine. Has anyone ever seen one of this aluminum cam side covers? Walt

Walt,

Do you have a photo, you likely have the little known Magnesium version of the side valve cover.

I have one, the dead giveaway is that it takes two short bolts instead of a long and a short one. Also if you remove a small piece and put a flame to it it will ignite.

Fordgarage.com, Vince Falter's website has more information about them.

Walt,

I know very little about them, I thought mine was aluminium for years and I almost gave it away thinking it was aftermarket. Until reading through Vince's website one day and came across his page on side covers, that's when I shaved off a piece and tested it.

Here is a thread that I started when I asked about them:

I've also seen aluminum water pumps and water outlets.

Here is one polished on my track roadster engine. Sadly they don't stay shiny very long.

Brent, that's a beautifull engine. Is that a Crager head? I built one a couple of years ago with a Crager head for a customer. Walt

I just acquired a complete 1934 Engine; the pan has never been modified to go in an A. It has the aluminum side timing cover. Do not know if it was changed over the years ?

I have one of those aluminum side covers in the barn, and kept it because it is different. I like stuff that is different.

I saw a stock replacement "A" intake manifold made out of aluminum on eBay once.

I found one on a B engine last summer the hard way. I didn't notice it and when the engine came out of the caustic tank the cover was ruined. I kept it and will check it for the 2 short bolts instead of one long and one short.

I've got one of the aluminum-magnesium side timing gear covers. I got mine in a collection that i bough a few years ago. The threads where the front edge of the oil pan connects are bad. I figured the dissimilar metal reaction did them in. could probably be repaired with thread inserts. I saved it because it is not the norm.

I have one also, and it was on a Model A engine that did not have any numbers stamped on it. I have no need to keep it, so if anyone wants to buy it let me know. [email protected]

So, were they painted engine color, natural, or polished(unlikely)? I don't remember seeing this in the JS.
