Default windows stick open

My windows wouldn’t go all the way down on my ’29 cabriolet and I was given different suggestions about why they wouldn’t. However, nobody mentioned the quarter inch weather strip on the outside of the window that keeps water out of the door. Mine was original and hard as a brick. There was no way that my windows with their metal frames could get by that weather strip. So, I pulled off the door panel and window regulator and raised the window so it was above the door itself. I used a rope to suspend the window and frame from the rafters in my garage, and removed the four wood screws that hold the weather strip channel. Now, I’m using a sharp probe to get the old weather strip out of the channel. It is not an easy job. When I’m done removing it, I’m going to insert a strip of 1/2 inch wide, 23 inch long, and 1/8 inch thick rubber that I’ll cut using a straight edge. The opening in the original channel is a little bit more than 1/8, but I figure that I can compress that down to 1/8” or less using a vice. The original weather strip had cloth in the center and was tapered toward the window. It also had a grove to hold it in place. I hope that the new rubber will fit tight enough so it won’t pull out when the window is rolled up and down. I figure that I can use a grinder to taper the rubber once it’s secure in the channel. I’ll let you know how all this works out.

For the tapered rubber I used a windshield wiper blade refill, trimmed to fit.

I'm not positive on the 1929 Cabriolet but I was told that all the way down there may still be about 1/4 inch above the window trim. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

I tried using a wiper blade, but ended up making my own out of the rubber I had. It seems to work and the window goes down so it is level with the top of the door.

Before you put the door panel back on, spray the glass channels with PAM, really helps. (Or use dusting wax spray or even Armorall)

One of my rear windows wouldn't go down all the way. Took the panel off to see what gives, and found a "For Sale" sign had slid down there!

Hi Will,

Never a dull moment ..... Model a surprises ????

About 30 years ago I had my 1930 Coupe parked in our non-electrically illuminated old carriage house with a dirt floor.

Because of a weak battery, went to get my crank under the front seat, (without a flashlight), just before dark.

Wow .... almost jumped through the tin roof .... found about a six (6) foot long rattlesnake skin under the seat where a rattlesnake had shed his skin ..... good thing he was not still in his skin ..... friend of mine next to me never saw the skin .... but when he saw me jump, he took off running.

I fixed a rattle by removing a HORSESHOE & a HUNTING KNIFE from inside a door.

Bill,

Vintage Model A Mysteries and today's FBI Investigation type responses ????

Could it be possible that this vintage Horseshoe was for Good Luck to make sure his Model A could make it back home ...... and the hunting knife was probably a back up Survival Tool ...... in case he was stranded in the middle of nowhere .... after his Good Luck Horseshoe did not work ????

One has to be quick to work for the FBI today !!!
