Default Tire size for 1940 Standard V8

What’s the widest tire I can fit on the stock wheel? Thanks in advance

Tire manufacturers list rim width for tires, they list those for a reason so for safety don't push that. You most likely have 4x16" rims. There are some wider rims with the old Ford 5 x 5 1/2 pattern or you can have wheels made. There are a lot of variables in your question. Do you want to run the stock hubcaps? Do you want the tires to look stock? Would you consider 15" rims instead of 16?

Looks most likely that I will be running a bias ply unless I skipped over the right looking bias ply look alike on Coker’s website.
Id really prefer a radial but I want it to look correct
Stock hub caps are a must.

Don’t know if this helps, I’m running Wheel Smith wheels.
Front are 16x4.5 not 4”. 2.75” back space
Rear are 16x6 with 3 7/8” back space

Diamond Back Auburn Deluxe Radial they look like a bias ply.

Fronts are 4.50-16
Rears are 7.00-16

The Green Bible (4/49 original copy and 11/50 reprint copy)shows in 1940 the Standard could have been either Model 01A, the 85 hp, or Model 022A, the 60 hp. In the 1015 Wheel Sections of each catalog only the 16” x 4.00” wheel 11A 1015 is listed for use with either the bias ply 6.00-16” or 6.50-16”.

But taking this beyond the Green Bible, since we know Ford dropped parts in later print versions of the catalogs, I checked the 1940 National Wheel and Rim Association (NWRA) catalog and see that Model 022A would have been fitted with 16” x 3.5” wheels, number 022A 1015. If your Standard is a 60 hp model I would think the 6.00-16” might be the limit on tire size. Stu

The 60Hp cars had the serial# start with 54. Your car should have the 16X4 wheels and you would run the 600X16 tires.

Diamond Back Auburn 600 or 650 radials, look old timey but will make your car drive very good.

I agree withKrylon32. The Diamond back tires have a good look and are very drivable. They also offer a service to remove all the names and numbers from the sidewalls.

I’m happy with the looks of my Diamond Back Auburn’s , if they ride as well as Diamond Backs reputation I’ll be even happier. Zoom in and you can see the detail, I chose black walls.

To bad you don't have the 16" x 3-1/2" wide, '40, 5 on 5-1/2 lug pattern wheels that came on the 60hp vehicles. You could most likely sell five of those for enough to buy a complete set of new tires.

Looks good, I’m having a hard time finding the 600r16 tube size. Anyone know where I can find them and what I need for a valve stem type? Forgive me, I’m used to tubeless radial.....

Starting at the beginning. Your 16” x 4.00” stock wheels are Ford 01A 1015. That number later was changed to 11A 1015. Kelsey Hayes shows both numbers cross refer to their wheel number 22977. That wheel is shown to have outer rim number 21258 which they show to have a Tire and Rim Association (TRA) drop center profile 4.00E. I’ll come back to edit to add the TRA drawing of the 4.00E.

Using this cross section Coker should be able to tell you what tube, valve size, and valve placement is correct for the rim. Stu

Another place to call would be Universal Tire. They share an ownership relationship with Coker. On their page for the 6.00R16” radial they show their recommended tube. Stu

Cobra......I bought the Coker's 5 years ago and never looked back. They look original and there is a big difference in the ride and handling. Expensive as hell, but I thought....I'll only buy them once !

When I bought tubes rated for use with radial tires (have both Coker & Diamondback) I found them at an Agricultural Farm Equipment Supply Store near where I live. They had them in stock as well as the plastic grommets that are needed to protect the valve stems from chaffing and failing where they connect to tube. These were quality tubes that sold at half the cost the tire dealers, as previously mentioned, were selling them for. I've never had a problem with either set of these radial tires that are mounted on stock '35, 4" wide, wire wheels.

Yeah JM35...forgot about that. I finally had to buy radial tubes as a couple of the normal tubes slide around and pinched the valve stem. No probs since getting the correct tubes. Good point !!
