Default Early 28 bendix

I have owned 3 of these early 28 bendixes. This is the only one with the unique bolt on the spring. What was Henry thinking?

It was the "service drive" to replace the troublesome Abell drive. The special headless bolt was needed for clearance on the multiplate flywheel.

After November 1928 the more common 5/8" drive took over.

I have used the DR Service Drive on two different Very Early 28's and have had no problems. I did not want to fool around with shims and use the troublesome Able Drive, that is why Ford came out with the DR Service Drive.
Just my opinion,

Ron
